Tennessee Titans: Year End Review

Another season...another non post season for the Tennessee Titans. At 7-9, Tennessee must be kicking themselves for failing to capitalize on their numerous opportunities to make the playoffs...especially after losing six of those games by 7 points or less. Watching San Diego (9-7) and Pittsburgh (8-8), two teams the Titans defeated earlier in the season, fight it out for the last playoff spot in week 17 added salt the wound. So what went wrong? Who's to blame?

Let's take a look.

In order to win in today's NFL, you need to have quality qb play. The Titans were average at that position, thus the average end result. Starting qb Jake Locker started out playing well, committing no turnovers through the first four weeks. Tennessee was 3-1 coincidentally, with their lone loss coming on the road...in overtime. Locker was injured in week 5, and the Titans season fell apart. Ryan Fitzpatrick entered, and so did the turnovers (12 int's in 9 starts). Locker returned briefly, only to add four more int's of his own. With so many close games, the qb's, and their turnovers, were largely responsible for the team's slide.

The run game was nothing spectacular (14th in the league, avg 118.4 yds per game), but was productive when asked to be. Newly acquired Shonn Green and Jackie Battle provided the tough short yardage conversions the Titans sorely lacked last season. They also combined for 5 red zone rushing td's. Chris Johnson quietly amassed 1,422 yards form scrimmage, with 10 total td's. It's hard to judge this unit solely by the numbers, as the team's philosophy switched to a shotgun, empty set attack when Fitzpatrick entered the lineup. Which brings me to the passing game.

Coming into the season, the Titans' receivers were touted to be the most talented group the franchise had assembled in Nashville. And Kenny Britt was projected to lead this group with a standout season.

Good news and bad news.

The bad news? Kenny Britt flamed out (no pun intended) early in the season, and made no contribution this year. Consequently, his days as a Titan are over. The good news? This year's receiving corps still managed to be the most talented since moving to Nashville. Following up his league leading rookie reception campaign, Kendall Wright lead the team in receptions (94) and yards (1,079) this season. Wright has established himself as a young star on the rise. Rookie wr Justin Hunter also showed flashes of big play ability (lead team with 19.7 yd per rec), and improved each week as the season progressed. Veteran Nate Washington was his usual steady self (58 rec, 919 yds), and more importantly, continues to mentor the young receivers with his professionalism and tenacious work ethic. And newly acquired te Delanie Walker paid huge dividends in the passing game. Not only was Walker a steady receiver (60 rec), he brought a physicality to the run game that his predecessor could not. The Titans may want to develop another young te, but other than that, this unit lived up to expectations.

Although they finished a modest 14th in total defense, Tennessee made huge strides on that side of the ball. Remember last year's defense? The one that was 28th in the league? Credit assistant defensive coordinator Gregg Williams for, in large part, establishing a much needed identity for that group. Corner back Alterraun Verner lead the team with 5 int's, and earned his first trip to the pro bowl. Defensive tackle Jurrell Casey was a pro bowl snub after notching an insane 10.5 sacks. That's incredibly hard to do at that position. The linebacking corps was an eye sore for the most part, regardless of who played where. Newly acquired safety Bernard Pollard was a nice addition. Like Gregg Williams, Pollard brought a toughness, an identity to that unit. Playing on a one year deal, Pollard has stated that he would like to stay in Nashville. Verner has already expressed  that he would test the free agent market. Tennessee would be wise to bring both back.

There was absolutely nothing special about the Titans' special teams unit this year. Darius Reynaud caught the opening kick off of the season at the one yard line. He stepped back into the end zone and downed the ball....for a safety. We should have known then that would be a sign of things to come. Reynaud made more costly errors, ultimately costing him his job. The Titans replaced him with some dude off the street, and he messed up so bad that Tennessee sent him back before the light changed. They finally got it right by signing veteran journeyman Leon Washington, who made an immediate positive impact...averaging 30 yards per return to close the season. This unit cost Tennessee at least two games, and could have been three (Pittsburgh), a mess of a unit to put it nicely.

Head coach Mike Munchak survived black Monday, but is still not out of the water. A decision on his future could come by week's end. Regardless of the coach, if Tennessee does not address the qb, lb, and special teams units quickly, then the coach it'self would not really matter.

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 16: PLAYOFF SEASON FINALE

What's up football family?!? Welcome to week 16 of the fantasy football season! Well ladies and gents...it's finally here...your championship game. Win or lose, congrats to each and every one of you. Seems like just yesterday we were logging into our fantasy football host site...eagerly anticipating our draft slot. Time surely flies when you're having fun! This week we'll focus on the flex position, so if you're undecided on who should fill that slot for you in this all important game, then once again you've come to the right place! The boys are back with that championship news you can use for the season finale.

SO LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!

Marques Colston: WR, New Orleans

Colston's up and down play left him in and out of your line up this season, but he's come on strong lately, and just in time for you. The last two weeks Colston hauled in 17 catches for 217 yards and 3 tds. He torched Carolina, this week's opponent, to the tune of 9/125/2 a couple of weeks ago.

Chicago Bears vs Philadelphia Eagles

The Bears offense vs the Eagles defense...plus the Eagles offense vs the Bears defense...equals start everybody but the defenses!! That means Cutler, Forte, Jeffries, Bennett, Foles, Jackson, McCoy, and Cooper are all must starts. Points should be a'plenty in this one...provided the weather plays nice Sunday night.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Greg Jennings: WR, Minnesota

Minnesota wr Greg Jennings torched Philly last week for 11 catches, 163 yards, and a td. With Matt Cassel under center, Jennings has flourished to the tune of 23/294/2 the past 3 weeks. With the uncertainty of the health of their rb's, look for Minnesota to throw it a ton this week against Cincinnati, giving Jennings an attractive match up this week.

Aldrick Robinson: WR, Washington

With the season over, Washington has elected to give fresh faces a look to close the season. Enter qb Kirk Cousins and wr Aldrick Robinson. Both were successful last week against Atlanta, with Robinson posting a 4/99 stat line. Robinson should certainly be able to eclipse the century mark this week against Dallas and their dead last ranked pass defense, giving up just under 300 yards per game through the air.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of, and plan on starting Arizona Cardinals wr Larry Fitzgerald this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert! Yes, Fitz went off last week, but he'll miss practice Wednesday as he undergoes the league's concussion test protocol. If he does play, he draws the worst match up in the league this week in the Seahawks and their top ranked pass defense (less than 180 yards a game). It's raining red flags in Washington for Fitzgerald owners this week.

I would like to send a shout out to the fellas that made this season a success:

"New York" Nick Johnson, Daniel "DP" Padilla, and  Michael "Big Mike" Jasso. They are the engine that makes this Ferrari go, and this couldn't have been done it without y'all.

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good luck, and see you in August!!

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 15 PLAYOFFS

What's up football family?!? Welcome to week 15 of the fantasy football season. For those of you that advanced last week...congrats. For those of you that start your playoffs this week...welcome to the party...and for those that are just dropping by...a humble thank you on behalf of the fellas. This week we're focusing on flex play options...so if you're undecided on what to do with that slot, then once again you've come to the right place! The boys are back with that playoff news you can use for week 15.

SO LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!!

Dwayne Bowe: WR, Kansas City

Bowe fell out of fantasy favor during the bye weeks, but has turned it around just in time. Last week vs Washington, Bowe put up 4/69/1, giving him three td's his last four games. It could have been more last week, but the game was too out of reach to keep throwing. Oakland, this week's opponent, has been thrown on all year...to the tune of 250 yards a game. A great opportunity for Bowe to make it four td's in his last five.

Coradelle Patterson: WR, Minnesota

Coradelle Patterson, rookie out of Tennessee, is quietly putting together a solid rookie campaign. He's also peaking at just the right time for fantasy owners. Last week vs Baltimore, Patterson put up 5/141/1. And for you leagues that score return yards...throw in another 111 for Coradelle. An all purpose threat (514 total yards and 2 td's the last four games), Patterson draws an excellent match up against Philly...and their 31st ranked pass defense...that's giving up over 285 yards a game through the air.

Delanie Walker: TE, Tennessee

For you Gronk owners, Tennessee te Delanie Walker makes for a nice playoff fill in. Walker returned to practice this week for the Titans, and is qb Ryan Fitzpatrick's favorite target. Hauling in 20/204/2 over his last four games played, Walker gets a great opportunity to continue that trend this week vs the Cardinals...who have been getting killed by te's all season long. Worst in the league in that area.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Toby Gerhart: RB, Minnesota

Minnesota back up rb Toby Gerhart filled in nicely for injured AP last week, rushing for 89 yards and a td...at 5.9 yards an attempt. Although he tweaked his hamstring last week, AP owners should still pick up Gerhart as insurance. If he (AP or Gerhart) does play, then he has a great match up against a Philly defense that's giving up 112 yards per game on the ground.

Steve Smith: WR, Carolina

Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith put up 6/49/1 against a tough (top 3) Saints defense that was playing in the dome. Still the focal point of the Panthers passing attack (7 or more targets in 7 of his last 10 games), Smith draws a much better match up this week as he faces the Jets...who give up 254 yards a game through the air. Look for another end zone stare down from Mr. Smith to some unsuspecting Jet's db.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of, and plan on starting New York Giants wr Hakeem Nicks this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert! His 5 catch, 135 yard performance was nice, but it had one week wonder written all over it. For starters, that was Nicks' first 100 yard game in six weeks. He also has zero td's this year. As in none........

(letting that marinate)

It's not looking good for Nicks to record his first td this week, as he faces an angry Seattle defense that just happens to be number one in the league against the pass. Furthermore, King Spatula...aka...Eli Manning is tied for the lead in interceptions thrown. Seattle leads the league in picks. It's raining red flags in Jersey this Sunday afternoon.

***A Playoff message from Big Mike***

Be sure to check the weather report Sunday morning before you make your final changes. You may want to know if your kicker will be playing in a blizzard (see Detroit and Philly). Every point counts. ~ Big Mike

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good luck!

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 14: PLAYOFFS

What's up football family?!?! Welcome to week 14 of the fantasy football season! You're probably reading this for one of two reasons this week.

1. You made your fantasy playoffs
2. You enjoy the show

In either scenario....congrats...and a humble thank you on behalf of the fellas. It's playoff time ballas and ballettes....which means you probably have a good feel for your core starting lineup. After all...they brought you this close to a championship right? What we will discuss today, and going forward, are your flex play options. If you are having match up issues, or can't decide one way or the other, then you've once again come to the right place! The boys are back with that playoff news you can use for week 14.

SO LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!

Michael Floyd: WR, Arizona

Arizona wr Michael Floyd has been playing out of his mind lately, peeking just in time for the playoffs. The last three weeks, Floyd  hauled in 18 rec, 396 yards, and 2 tds. The Rams defense should do little to slow Floyd down this week, as they're giving up close to 250 yards a game through the air this year.

Julian Edelman: WR, New England

The last two weeks, New England wr Julian Edelman put up matching 9 catch, 100 plus yard performances. He also threw in 2 tds for good measure. Yes, Cleveland has a top 5 pass defense, but so did Houston...the Patriots opponent last week. All New England did was throw for nearly 400 yards. It's Tom Brady people, ride the hot hand this week.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Brandon LaFell: WR, Carolina

Carolina wr Brandon LaFell has a td two of the past three weeks, and has been targeted at least five times the last six weeks. Both of Lafell's recent td's were in the red zone, which is encouraging because he's traditionally known as a vertical threat. LaFell should get plenty of targets again this week in the Super Dome, where the Saints are a juggernaut on offense. Super Cam will have to throw more than run in this one...making this a good match up for LaFell this week.

Montee Ball: RB, Denver

Denver rb Montee Ball has entrenched himself as the complimentary back to Knowshon Moreno, evidenced by his 223 total yard, 2td performance over the past three weeks. Ball also has seven receptions in that span, giving him upside for ppr leagues. He should have opportunities again this week against a Tennessee defense that's givng up close to 115 yards a game on the ground.

***Going DEEP with DP***

Oakland Raiders defense:

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the Oakland Raiders defense. The best of the best are among you, and points are at a premium. Big Mike told you...it's all about the match ups. And Oakland has a great one this week against the Jets and their anemic offense. How anemic? Starting qb Geno Smith is the king spatula, turning it over 8 times with only one touchdown (rushing) the last five games. No wonder why New York is 31st in the league in scoring. So what do the Jets do this week? Yep...start Geno Smith. Get the Raiders defense in there.

Ladarius Green: TE, San Diego

For my 12 to 16 team leagues, we're about to go DEEP DEEP with San Diego te Ladarius Green. San Diego is now featuring a two te set, with Ladarius Green being the beneficiary...to the tune of over 200 yards and 2 tds the past three weeks. Green makes for a quality last minute replacement for Tennessee te Delanie Walker, who will likely be out this week with a concussion.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of, and planing to start San Fransicso wr Michael Crabtree this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. It's great to see Crabtree back on the field, making his long awaited debut last week. And I know it's tempting to want to thrust him into your flex position this week...but please consider this. Seattle, this week's opponent, has the number one pass defense in the league...giving up less than 180 yards a game through the air. They also have one of the top corners in the league...who will likely shadow Crabtree across the field. Throw in the fact that the 49ers are 31st in the league in passing offense, averaging 180 yards a game themselves, and you have enough red flags to stay away this week.

Be sure to check out Big Mike's College Picks of the Week this week.....

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good Luck!

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 13: Regular Season Finale

What's up football family? Welcome to week 13 of the fantasy football season! Give yourselves a round of applause....you made it through the dreaded bye weeks! As we prepare for the regular season finale...and impending playoffs, we're going to switch it up a bit. Barring injury, most of us have a good feel for our starting roster. What we will  discuss this week...and beyond...are the best "flex play" options for your roster. Every point counts, especially with playoff seeds finalizing this week. If you are in need of flex play advise, then you've once again come to the right place. The Boys are back with that news you can use for week 13.

So LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!

Rashad Jennings: RB, Oakland

Oakland's Rashad Jennings put up 122 total yards last week against Tennessee. Since filling in for the oft-injured Darren McFadden, Jennings has been on fire...amassing 553 total yards and two td's the past four games. Jennings has also hauled in 15 catches in that span...making him a flex play with huge upside in ppr leagues. Jennings should be able to do work again this week against the Dallas Cowboys and their 30th ranked run defense. The Cowboys are giving up 133 yards a game on the ground.

Nate Burelson: WR, Detroit

After sitting out nearly two months, the Lions wasted no time in getting  wr Nate Burelson back acclimated to live bullets. Burelson was targeted a healthy 10 times last week, hauling in 7 receptions for 77 yards and a td. The unquestioned starter opposite Megatron, look for Burelson to post similar numbers this week against Green Bay and their 20th ranked pass defense.

Rob Housler, TE, Arizona

If you have a W/T or W/R/T  flex spot that you are trying to fill this week, then Arizona's Rob Housler is worth consideration. Housler has at least 4 receptions and 50 yards his last three games. He also draws a great match up this week against the Philadelphia Eagles, and their dead last pass defense (300.1 yards a game).

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Jacoby Jones: WR, Baltimore

Jones turned in his first 100 yard performance of the year last week against the Jets, and threw in a touchdown for good measure. Jones is an especially good flex play this week for leagues who score return yards, as he totaled 127 additional yards on special teams. Jones should turn in another all around solid performance this week against the Steelers, who's suddenly high octane offense will keep Baltimore's passing attack in play. And Pittsburgh's propensity to score should net Jones (and you) bonus return points as well.

Mohamed Sanu: WR, Cincinnati

Cincinnati wr Mohamed Sanu has established himself as the second wr option behind all world A.J. Green, evidenced by his 22 targets the last three games. Sanu, who scored a td in his last game, should continue to hoard targets (and points) this week against San Diego and their 27th ranked pass defense...giving up over 275 yards a game through the air.

***Going DEEP with DP***

Benny Cunningham: RB, St. Louis

Cunningham filled in nicely for injured starter Zac Stacy last week, rushing for 109 yards and a touchdown against the Bears. The prior game, Cunningham had 90 total yards...and averaged 10 yards per touch. And that was with a healthy Zac Stacy playing. Cunningham is the odds on favorite to start this week if Stacy can not suit up. Yes, the 49ers have a tough defense overall, but can be had on the ground...to the tune of 103 yards per game this year.

Dennis Johnson: RB, Houston

For my 12 -16 team leagues, we're about to go DEEP DEEP with Houston rb Dennis Johnson. Current starter Ben Tate is banged up, and was benched last week for ineffectiveness. Johnson stepped in and put up a decent 74 yards on 13 carries. He also caught 2 passes for 13 yards for you ppr leagues. Look for Johnson's role to increase this week (even if Tate plays) against the Patriots and their 31st ranked run defense...giving up over 139 yards a game.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of Indianapolis Colts qb Andrew Luck...and you plan to play him this week...then you, my friend, are on homer alert. Andrew's "Luck" has been anything but recently, as he's thrown for 300 yards just once the last nine games. And now he's becoming a spatula, with five turn overs (only 2 td's) the last three games. This week Luck draws a Titans pass defense that's giving up less than 220 yards a game...8th in the league. Too many red flags if you have a better match up on your bench...especially if the playoffs are on the line.

Be sure to check out Big Mike's College Picks of the Week this Saturday morning....

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good Luck...and Happy Thanksgiving!!

The Washington Redskins... A lesson in leadership

Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. A disturbing article I just read leads me to question who..or if there is a leader in the Washington Redskins organization.

Jason Lisk and Michael Shamburger of TheBigLead.com reports that the Redskins offensive linemen aren't helping franchise qb Robert Griffin III up after being knocked down from a sack. According to Lisk and Shamburger, teammates have only picked RGIII up from the ground after being sacked three times.

They've allowed 26 of'em.

Let me preface my statement by saying that I have not done my own research on this, but if this stat is correct, then that speaks to much larger issues brewing in Washington.

For starters, isn't helping the qb up from any type of knock down common practice in football now? We see that on the scholastic and collegiate level every weekend, let alone the pros. And let's be clear...once?...fine...twice...hmm..ok....23 out of 26 times you walk away from your (still recovering) franchise qb? That's a trend ladies and gentlemen. It reminds me of the scene in Any Given Sunday, when star qb (Jaime Foxx) was popping off in the media about how super human he was. The following game, the offensive linemen let him get drilled time after time by the defense.

"What's the matter Willie...you forget your invisible juice?"

But I digress....

Seriously...two things jump right out if TheBigLead.com's report is true.

1. Why are the linemen not picking up their qb after he's sacked? I mean...they are, in most cases, directly responsible right? Are they letting defenders by?

2. If the reporters at TheBigLead.com were able to uncover this, why was the team not? And how in the world was it allowed to get to 23 out of 26 anyway?

You would assume that Washington's position coaches, offensive coordinator, and head coach would scrutinize game field to a higher degree than a couple of reporters right? How did this go unnoticed? And why has this not been addressed and corrected? Even if done anonymously and internally?

It says one of two things. Either the behavior is being enabled...which is insane. Or the behavior is going unnoticed...which is completely negligent. Either way it shows a lack of leadership...from the coach, to the qb, to the team as a unit. Someone has to step up and say..."wait a minute...that's our qb...pick that man up".

We've already heard RGIII throw the coaching staff under the bus, while the wide receivers were on the radio throwing him under the bus, while the coach was on tv swearing that his locker room was not divided.

By the way...what's their record again?

BCS = Beat down Saturday

The 2013 college football season, and most importantly, the BCS era, is in it's final stages. And for the BCS, you couldn't ask for a better way to go out. For the first time since it's inception, the BCS could be faced with the possibility of it's top four teams (Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, Baylor) all finishing the season undefeated. And from the looks of things so far, that has a legitimate chance of happening.

The four above mentioned schools have all played lights out this year...and are deserving if they win out, but due to the BCS system, only two will "earn" the right to play for the big crystal football. Under next year's playoff system, all four teams would get their shot to state their claim...on the field. For now we're left with eye tests, apples to oranges comparisons, and revisionist history to determine who "theoretically" is the best team in the nation. The real losers in all of this, at least this week, are the opponents of at least three of those four teams.

Style points are a major contributing factor when determining the BCS rankings, just ask Ohio State...who can't buy a vote...even with the longest win streak in the nation. Fourth ranked Baylor can close the gap, or even leapfrog the Seminoles and Buckeyes today with a road win over 10th ranked Oklahoma State. The top three teams are all playing non ranked opponents, and are heavily favored today.

Translation...look for beat downs to be handed out like tissues at a wedding.

A word of caution to the fans of Chattanooga (Alabama), Idaho (Florida State), and Indiana (Ohio State), it will get ugly...very ugly today. But be encouraged to know that your games will provide plenty of snack run opportunities (td's = time outs), and your respective teams will all be in the lead segment of Sports Center tonight.

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 12: Bye Week Replacements

***Nick's New York State of Mind***

As we enter the final weeks of the fantasy football season, most of us are concerned about the playoff picture. Who should we start, and who should we bench? But the most important question is, how many points can I actually get with this player? The match ups should be the deciding factor. The main ingredient in your championship dish is now choosing the right qb. The first 11 weeks we stick to the script and remain patient, but if you're dealing with injuries or even a lack luster performance (Matt Ryan) then you might want to pick up a qb with the best match up. My second key ingredient is finding the team defense that's on a roll. The New York Giants have been just that for the last 3 games. My running back pick of the week is Indy's Donald Brown. For the past 3 weeks he's put up a total of 209 yards and 3 td’s, making the Cleveland Browns look much smarter than they really are. In the famous words of Steve Smith “Ice up son, Ice up”. Don’t be scared to make a one week choice to better your chances of becoming a legend. ~ New York Nick

What's up Football Family?!? Welcome to week 12 of the fantasy football season! This week marks the end of the dreaded bye weeks (applause)...with Cincinnati, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Seattle sitting this one out. If you need to replace a player from one of these squads, or as New York Nick suggested, looking to tweak your roster to the best match ups available, then you've once again come to the right place. The Boys are back with that news you can use for week 12.

So LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!!!

Rueben Randle: WR, New York Giants

Rueben Randle hauled in yet another td last week for the G-Men, giving him an impressive six td's over the last seven games. Look for Randle to extend that streak this week against Dallas, who's giving up over 310 yards a game through the air....dead last in the league.

Delanie Walker: TE, Tennessee

One of the lone bright spots during Tennessee's losing streak has been tight end Delanie Walker. Setting career highs last week for receptions (10) and yards (91), Walker has quickly become the favorite red zone target for back up qb Ryan Fitzpatrick. Walker's three td's over the last four games makes him a solid play against Oakland this week, who's 25th against the pass....giving up over 250 yards a game through the air.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Le'Veon Bell: RB, Pittsburgh

Bell turned in a solid performance last week against Detroit, racking up 96 total yards and a td. Le'Veon's receiving ability (at least 3 rec's in all but one game this year) makes him an attractive flex play option with upside. Cleveland, this week's opponent, was gashed by a rb with similar catching abilities last week for 96 total yards and four receptions...making this a solid match up in Bell's favor this week.

Cecil Shorts: WR, Jacksonville

Even without suspended wr Justin Blackmon for most of the season, Jacksonville's Cecil Shorts has been a model of consistency this year. Shorts has at least seven receptions in 5 of 9 games this year, and no fewer than two catches in any game this year. Shorts should be able to continue that trend this week against a Houston team that has put a stamp on it and mailed it in for the season, evidenced by them giving up 3 td's to a rookie back up qb from Oakland named Matt McGloin last week. Another solid match up play for Shorts.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of Baltimore's Ray Rice, and plan on starting him this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Yes, Rice had a great game last week vs Chicago with 148 total yards and a td. But that performance had One Week Wonder written all over it. Last week was Rice's first 100 yard game...of the year! Not only that, Rice has eclipsed 45 yards rushing only three times the entire year. This week Rice has a brutal match up against the New York Jets and their top ranked run defense. A defense that's giving up less than 74 yards a game on the ground. It's raining Red Flags in Baltimore this week.

Be sure to check out Big Mike's College Picks of the Week this Saturday morning.....

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good Luck!!

Brady Hoke era officially starts today for Michigan

After beating Notre Dame in front of a record crowd on September 7th, no one in Maize and Blue country could have predicted that Michigan would be relegated to just "playing out the season"...especially this early in November. For a myriad of reasons, the Wolverines are now out of the BCS and Big Ten Title race. The honeymoon between coach Hoke and Michigan...one that lasted well over two years...is now over. My 96 year old great uncle would always tell me that you can find out more about a man (or woman) in times of tribulation than in times of prosperity. Translated....how the Wolverines finish the season could speak more to Hoke's ability to resurrect the nation's all time leader in wins than any "big game victory" under his belt.

In 2011, Brady Hoke inherited one of the least talented rosters in Michigan's storied history. Hoke lead...basically the same roster that failed miserably under Rich Rodriguez...to an improbable 11 win season. A season that included a BSC Sugar Bowl win over Virginia Tech, and a win over rival Ohio State.  All was well in Wolverine land.

Last season, Michigan came back to earth somewhat. But all everything qb Denard Robinson was lost half way through the season with an injury to his throwing arm. Devin Gardner, who was Michigan's leading receiver at the time, moved to qb and played well down the stretch. So well in fact, that Robinson was moved to rb once he was cleared to return. Gardner's strong finish left the folks in Ann Arbor looking forward to the 2013 season.

This year? Well.....

Sitting at 6-3, and 2-3 in the Big Ten, Michigan has...at least on the surface...lost all incentive for finishing strong. Running the table would not lead to a Big Ten Title game, beating Ohio State....which is always nice...would only serve as a moral victory, and Hoke's undefeated home winning streak is now over.

What we see out of this Wolverine group the last three games will say a lot about Hoke's leadership. Will his team look inspired to play? Will they fold if they get punched in the mouth? Will they want to go out and win...because that's what winners do? The worst mistake that Brady Hoke could make now is to lose this team and have the rails come completely off the track.

The Athletic Director, Alumni, and most importantly...future recruits will also be monitoring the way that Michigan closes the season. We've seen Hoke in times of prosperity. Now we will see what he and his staff is really made of.

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 11: Bye Week Replacements

Whats up Football Family?!? Welcome to week 11 of the fantasy football season! The bye week gods were kind this week, with only two teams off (Dallas, St. Louis). Although owners of Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Jason Wittten, Tavon Austin, or Zach Stacy would beg to differ.

If you are looking to replace one of these players, or just looking to tweak your roster this week, then you've come to the right place! The Boys are back with that news you can use for week 11.

SO LET'S...GET...STARTED!!!!

Chris Ivory: RB, New York Jets

Ivory has taken command of the starting rb job in New York, thanks to posting two 100 yard rushing performances the past three games. The one he didn't, an early deficit made the Jets abandon the run game. Head coach Rex Ryan loves to run the ball, evidenced by Ivory getting a combined 58 attempts the last three games. He should continue that trend this week against Buffalo, who is 22nd in the league against the run...giving up over 115 yards a game.

Jerricho Cotchery: WR, Pittsburgh

Cotchery has recently become Big Ben's favorite target, hauling in four td's the past two games. If you're looking for a safe pick, then Jerricho fits the bill, recording a reception in every game he's played in this year. That streak should continue this week (both reception and td) against a Lions defense that's 27th against the pass...giving up over 275 yards a game.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

DeAndre Hopkins: WR, Houston

Another player that has a reception in every game played this year is Houston's DeAndre Hopkins. In the three games with Case Keenum under center, Hopkins has notched at least 54 yards receiving. And that was against three good pass defenses. The sledding should be easier for Hopkins this week as he faces an Oakland defense that's 22nd against the pass...giving up 247 yards a game.

Bobby Rainey: RB, Tampa Bay

Martin? Out. James? Done. Bobby Rainey...you're next up to bat. Tampa Bay continued to run the ball once James went down in the first quarter last Monday night...and Rainey benefited with 56 total yards and a td. Rainey is set to start this week, and draws a great match up against a Falcons defense that's 27th against the run...giving up over 126 yards a game.

***Going Deep with DP***

Shane Vereen, RB, New England

Shane Vereen, aka...the reason Danny Woodhead was not re-signed, has been removed from the injured reserve list and is scheduled to return to action this Monday night. Yes, the Carolina Panthers have a tough run defense, but Vereen is used in similar fashion as a Woodhead or Sproles...giving you "points by committee". Those points should add up to a quality add to your roster.

Chris Obonnaya, RB, Cleveland

For my deep leagues (12 plus teams) we're about to go DEEP DEEP with Cleveland's Chris Obonnaya. C.O. is already the 3rd down specialist (28 rec 2 tds), and Cleveland has stated this week that he will get more early down work going forward. Translated....he's about to replace Willis McGahee, making him worth a stash.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of San Fransisco's Colin Kaepernick, and you plan to start him this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Kaepernick has struggled lately, throwing for 250 yards just once the past eight weeks. He's also thrown a td just once the past three weeks. Don't look for a breakout performance this week against New Orleans....who are absolutely brutal in the Super Dome (just ask Dallas). The Saints also boast the league's third ranked pass defense. Red flags are falling all over the place on this one.

Be sure to check out Big Mike's College Picks of the Week this Saturday morning.....

Thursday Night game comes at perfect time for Mike Munchak, Titans

The Tennessee Titans just had one of their most embarrassing home losses in quite some time, falling short by two points to the 0-8 Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday afternoon. Rookie first round draft pick, and offensive lineman Chance Warmack offered this statement following his holding penalty that lead to a game altering 4th qtr safety....

"If you mess up on a play, you clap it off and keep on moving. I’m never discouraged because if I make a mistake, I move on forward.”

For the Titans sake, I hope every player and coach in that organization feels that way, because let's face it, that loss was as bad as it gets...especially with so much riding on the game. Luckily for Tennessee, they have to quickly forget about that loss because the division leading Colts come to Music City on Thursday night, and the division title is still up for grabs.

Whether or not the Titans are a playoff team is not up for debate, history has shown that a 7-9 division winner (Seattle) made the playoffs a few years ago, and the 2013 NFC East could boast a division champ with an equal record. What is up for debate is whether or not head coach Mike Munchak can cut it at this level.

Tennessee benefited yesterday from being a small market team. I watched several hours of post game coverage and the Titans loss barely got mentioned. The Colts and Cowboys respective losses dominated the coverage.

Tennessee, and Mike Munchak specifically, won't be so lucky Thursday.

Anyone that has watched the NFL Network's Thursday Night Football pre game show knows that it is long...and extensive. As we say back home..."they get all up in yo business." Some of the warts that are only seen by the die hard fan will be on full display for the world to see. Tennessee's propensity to lose to the worst teams in the league ( 2013 0-8 Jags, 2011 0-13 Colts), qb Jake Locker's inability to stay on the field, Mike Munchak being the first official candidate for the proverbial "hot seat", and when all else fails...CJ's "decline".

If the Titans were smart though, they would use this as an opportunity to re-introduce themselves to the rest of the league. Regardless of yesterday's outcome, they still have a lot to play for. Now we will see what mild mannered Mike Munchak has up his sleeve. Will he succumb to the whoa is me...aw golly gee...life ain't fair mentality? After all, he just lost his starting qb for the remainder of the season right?

Or will he do something that we have not seen under his regime? Light a fire under a team that seems to be content with 8-8. Do you want to show your boss that you can thrive under pressure? Do you want to show a national audience that you belong in the playoff conversation?...that mediocrity is unacceptable? Do you want to leave a positive impression in your one and only nationally televised game?

These are the questions that Mike Munchak and his Titans must answer. And it must be done on the field. The eye in the sky don't lie, and you're the only NFL show in town. No one will remember the loss if you handle business Thursday night. In fact, the new storyline would be that the Colts...not the Titans...are on the decline. But if Tennessee's national perception hasn't changed on Friday morning, then Mike Munchak will have bigger things to worry about than the media.

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 10: Bye Week Replacements

***Opening Rant with New York Nick***

One Week Wonders

We all do it, we all sit and watch these one week wonders put up huge numbers. Instantly, we think to ourselves that come Tuesday we must put in our bid, because this is next coming of Jerry Rice or Emmitt Smith. My thought process for break out superstars is negative, and I usually wouldn’t waste my time or waiver request number to pursue them. But after seeing Marvin Jones put up 122 yards and 4 td's, and Riley Cooper drop 139 yards with 3 td’s, even I put in my bid. Of course the fantasy gods laughed and denied my request, just to bring me back to reality. The next week Marvin Jones didn’t even find the end zone, and guaranteed Riley Cooper won’t have the same performance for the rest of his career. Stop allowing the media rerun clips of glitter every 30 minutes to lure you into something you might regret. Stop allowing the media to send you mental text messages and voice mails, bullying you as though they were as powerful as Richard Incognito (had to go there, it’s ridiculous). My advice, stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to, stick to the players that have gotten you this far for so many years.  ~ New York Nick

“I seen a rainbow yesterday”.…in my Left Eye voice…..but I digress…..

What up Football Family?!? Welcome to week 10 of the fantasy football season! Four more teams on bye (New England, New York Jets, Kansas City, Cleveland), and a significant qb injury, have most of us scrambling for replacements. Good news! The Boys are back in the house with that fantasy news you can use for week 10.

So LETS...GET...STARTED!!!

Case Keenum: QB, Houston

If you're down Tom Brady or Aaron Rogers this week (we'll do a separate blog for those who are starting any of those other bye week qbs), then Houston's Case Keenum makes for a solid week 10 play. Keenum scorched a solid Colts defense for 376 total yards and 3 td's last week. Since taking over for Matt Scrub...I mean...Shaub two weeks ago, Keenum has totaled over 600 yards passing and 4td's. The Texans are beat up at rb, so Case will have to show off his arm once again this week against the Cardinals, who by the way, are giving up 254 yards a game through the air.

Terrelle Pryor: QB, Oakland

If Keenum is already snatched up, then Oakland's Terrelle Pryor will make for a nice plan B. Last week, Pryor put up over 380 combined yards against Philly. Yes, Pryor is a spatula (turn over specialist), but he more than makes up for it with his legs...racking up 200 yards on the ground the last two weeks alone. Pryor has a good shot to maintain those numbers this week against the Giants, who are giving up over 240 yards per game through the air, and 100 yards per game on the ground.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Rashard Mendenhall: RB, Arizona

Mendenhall returned to practice Monday, his injured toe appears to be healed, and he's set to start this week against Houston. Although back up Andre Ellington will steal some carries, Mendenhall will still get the early down and goal line touches. That's important because Mendenhall has found the end zone two of the past three weeks. Both td's were against top 5 defenses. Houston is 18th against the run, giving up 115 yards a game on the ground. Solid replacement match up.

Marlon Brown: WR, Baltimore

Brown put up 5/54/2 against a tough Browns secondary last week. Both td's were in the red zone, making him a player with upside for week 10. The Ravens run game is...is...where is it? Brown has 5 td's his last 7 games, so it's safe to assume that Joe Flacco will look for Brown in the red zone again this week.

***Going Deep with DP***

Josh McCown: QB, Chicago

McCown acted a fool in front of a national audience last Monday night, torching the Packers for 292 total yards and 2 td's. Since taking over for injured starting qb Jay Cutler, McCown has put up over 500 yards, 3 td's, and no picks. Because of this, the Bears...and even Cutler himself, are hinting to take another week off. If Cutler sits, then McCown is a solid week 10 play.  Detroit, this week's opponent, is giving up 272 yards a game through the air.

Andre Brown: RB, New York Giants

For my 12 - 16 team ballers, we're about to go DEEP DEEP with New York Giants rb Andre Brown. The Giants have confirmed that Brown will make his long awaited return this week, and by all accounts, will be immediately inserted into the starting lineup. Conditioning will be an issue, so Brown's touches may be limited this week. But look for Brown to emerge as a solid sleeper to add for your stretch run.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of, and plan to start Atlanta qb Matt Ryan this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Matty Ice has turned into Matty Spatula, handicapping his owners with 7 int's the past two weeks. There are several reasons for that, most of which aren't Ryan's fault. But don't look for the Seahawks defense to lend a shoulder to cry on. Seattle has a league high 13 interceptions...a huge reg flag to stay away this week.

Respect tour starts Saturday for Michigan

The University of Michigan is one of the few schools of it's ilk that does not have an official mascot...although my homie Mike could make a strong case for one. Heading into this weekend's match up with rival, and BCS ranked Michigan State, the Wolverines should adopt Rodney Dangerfield as their mascot. You know...the one most famously known for getting no respect? Michigan has every right to feel disrespected...after being slotted at 22 in the initial BCS rankings. Or do they?

The powerhouse sports networks agree with the BCS...citing Michigan's inconsistency, turnover proneness, and close calls against "inferior" opponents as their rationale. All of those facts are...to date...irrefutable, and must be the reason that Michigan dropped in the polls two weeks in a row after winning their game (which...you must admit...doesn't happen often once, let alone twice). Maybe the 2007 loss to Appalachian State is still fresh in the voter's mind.

But supporters from Ann Arbor to Antarctica could plead a different case.

The Michigan Wolverines are 6-1, with their lone loss coming on the road....by three points....in quadruple overtime....to a divisional opponent. Supporters could point to the fact that Michigan has a win over a then top 15 ranked school (Notre Dame), something that other one loss teams (Texas A&M 12th, Texas Tech 15th, Oklahoma St 18th, and Louisville 19th) can't claim. Other schools have 2 losses with no wins over a top 15 opponent (LSU 13th, South Carolina 14th, and UCLA 20th). The Gamecoks even lost to an un ranked Tennessee team two weeks ago. Further evidence that the BCS poll should be the first official poll of the year.

But I digress.

Back to Michigan...for better or worse...the only one who can change their "Rodney Dangerfield" persona is them....starting in East Lansing on Saturday. The Wolverines have two nationally televised games remaining...one against 4th ranked and undefeated Ohio State. Michigan can still win the Big Ten regular season, and conference bowl championship, thus ensuring their slot in the Rose Bowl. Are the Wolverines a 1 loss team that's getting no respect from the voters and national media? Or are they overrated, and lucky to be ranked at all? We will soon find out if the national pundits...or rabid fan base is correct. As soon as Saturday.

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 9: Bye Week Replacements

***Opening rant with New York Nick***

Robert Griffin III, QB, Redskins

What happened? That should be the first question in your thought process while you watch any Redskins football game. What happen to the offensive line? What happen to the run game? What happen to the confidence of the rookie sensation RGIII? In most of our drafts he was a top 5 pick overall, but suddenly it seems as though him and Tony Romo have been drinking out of the same Gatorade cooler.  Last week against the Broncos, he threw for 132 yards with 2 interceptions, mind you that Chad Henne from the Jacksonville Death Squad had more fantasy points when they played Denver. Now you have to give a lot of the blame to his offensive line, each week we see him get slammed to the ground before he even gets a chance to break out of his knee brace (like Forrest Gump). I’m pleading with RGIII, and the Redskins organization, to please; PLEASE take the pink attire off his uniform. The way he keeps getting battered its beginning to look like domestic violence. ~ New York Nick

lol...but I digress...

Whats up football family?!? Welcome to week 9 of the fantasy football season! This week, the dreaded bye week is actin a fool...with Denver, Detroit, The Giants, Arizona, San Fransisco, and yes..the Death Squad Jags all out this week. No worries though, the Boys are back with that fantasy news you can use for week 9.

So LETS...GET...STARTED!!!

Jake Locker: QB, Tennessee

If you're down Kaepernick, Manning, or Stafford this week, then Titans qb Jake Locker is worth a flyer. Quiet as kept, Locker has a top ten qb rating, with 9 td's and only 1 turn over for the year. In his last outing, Jake threw for over 325 yards with a couple of td's against the 49ers. St. Louis, this week's opponent, is giving up just under 230 yards a game through the air, and will be selling out to stop the run. Locker should get his opportunities.

Kendal Wright: WR, Tennessee

For the reasons mentioned above, Kendall Wright, Locker's favorite target, is worth a flyer this week as well. Wright supplanted Kenny Britt as the starter opposite Nate Washington, and has additional upside in ppr leagues. His 40 catches for over 400 yards this season is impressive considering the fact that Tennessee has already played 5 top ten pass defenses their first seven games. The Locker / Wright combination could make for a good one week pairing against the Rams...who aren't a top ten defense at all.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Kenny Stills, WR, New Orleans

Rookie Saints wr Kenny Stills is drawing praise from head coach Sean Peyton, who stated that Stills "continues to really play well at a high level and at a consistent level". Even better if the head coach is also the play caller on offense. Stills has 193 yards and 3 tds the past two games. Drew Brees will throw on any and everybody, and the Jets gave up 4 tds to a slot receiver last week. Great match up.

Drew Davis: WR, Atlanta

Starting wr Roddy White has been out since Oct 7th, and has not practiced this week due to a myriad of injuries. Davis filled in nicely last week, putting up 5/77/1. Matt Ryan's turnovers hurt Davis' chances for more. Ryan won't throw 4 picks again this week, but will have to throw it a lot to beat the suddenly surging Panthers. Davis should get plenty of opportunities to better those numbers this week, even if a hobbled Roddy White plays.

***Goin Deep with DP***

Marvin Jones, WR, Cincinnati

I know what you're thinking...and no...I'm not suggesting that Jones will score 4 td's again this week. What I will say is that Jones is certainly no one week wonder, scoring 7 tds the past three weeks. He also scored in each of the last three games. To add to his value, fellow wr Mohamed Sanu will be a game time decision with an injury. The Dolphins are 20th against the pass, making Jones worthy of another start this week.

Tim Wright, WR/TE, Tampa Bay

What I like about Tim Wright is the fact that he is slotted (in most formats) as a te and wr, giving you roster flexibility if you feel your current te is too valuable to drop this week. He's also been productive, hauling in 19 receptions the past four games. He even threw in a td last week for good measure. The Buccaneers are a joke at qb right now, and Wright is evolving into a safety blanket. That equates to a safe pick up for you.

***Homer Alert***

Steven Jackson, RB, Atlanta

If you are all excited about Steven Jackson returning from injury, and plan to finally start him this week, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Aside from the fact that Carolina has a stout front seven and brutal rush defense (fewest rushing yards allowed so far), did you see Jackson run last week? It looked like he was playing in quicksand. I know that he's never been known to be a burner...but my goodness...he looked like Shaun Alexander the year he hit "the wall". I hope it was just rust....but this week and Carolina is not the time nor place to take a chance that it improves.

Be sure to check out Big Mike's College Picks of the week this Saturday morning......

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 8: Injuries Injuries Injuries

***Opening rant with New York Nick***

As Halloween approaches, I’m stuck with deciding what scares me more. Michael Myers walking down a dark hallway as he stutter steps to the door on the left...just to violently break it down? No,he doesn't compare to what we all fear. Please allow me to introduce the most hated evil the fantasy world has ever known, the grim reaper himself, ladies and gentlemen; I give you, “injury”. Injury has now plagued us all. From the top rb picks of the draft, to the top wr picks of the draft, each week we sit more and more players. We hit the FA pool only to find left over’s from last year’s Thanksgiving feast, crammed in the back of the fridge with green stuff growing out the gravy. Yes, I’m referring to the likes of Brandon Jacobs and Willis McGhee. My solution isn't pretty and it probably won’t get the job done on a consistent basis, but it’s simple. Glue as many players you can find and hopefully create a monster that can get you through the rest of the month until the reaper passes you bye. ~ New York Nick

Whatup football family?!? Welcome to week 8 of the fantasy football season. New York Nick was dead on (no pun intended). Injuries are starting to take their toll on our respective teams. Players like Matt Forte, Arian Foster, Ray Rice, Chris Johnson, and Ryan Matthews being on bye doesn't help either. If you have multiple injury / bye week decisions to make, then you've come to the right place. The Boys are back with that news you can use for week 8.

So LETS...GET...STARTED!!!!

LeVeon Bell: RB, Pittsburgh

Bell got a late start to the 2013 season, but has quickly entrenched himself as the number one rb in the Steel City. Last week, Bell accounted for 99 total yards. That just happens to be the Raiders...this week's opponent...average yards allowed on the ground this year (99.1). You can reasonably expect similar numbers this week.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

Harry Douglas: WR, Atlanta

Julio Jones? Out. Roddy White? Eh...might as well be. Enter...Harry Douglas. Last week Douglas put up 7 catches for 149 yards and a td in place of the injured starters. This week Douglas draws a Cardinals defense that's giving up over 250 yards through the air.

Joseph Fauria: TE, Detroit

Fauria, who's sitting on many waiver wires as we speak, has quietly amassed 5 td's already this season. He will get opportunities to increase that total this week against Dallas, and their 30th ranked pass defense.

***Going Deep with DP***

Jordan Reed: WR, Washington

Reed lit up the Bears last week for 9/134/1. Starter Fred Davis stays hurt, and Reed's role is steadily increasing. This week Reed has an excellent match up against Denver and their dead last (no pun intended) pass defense. Washington is terrible on defense as well, and a shootout will certainly bode well for Reed again this week.

Mike James: RB, Tampa Bay

With starter Doug Martin lost for the season, back up Mike James filled in and combined for 53 total yards. His 14 carries were impressive, and he's set to get the start this week against Carolina. If you owned Marin, you need to pick up James...like right now.

***Homer Alert***

If you are down Philip Rivers or Jay Cutler, and was looking to replace them with Alex Smith, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Yes, the Chiefs are undefeated, and the Browns aren't a household name. But please beware...the Browns have one of the pass defenses in the league, lead by arguably one of the best corners. Smith is solid, but a lil too safe for starter consideration this week. The Chiefs have a stout defense, so Smith may only have to hand the ball off, and move the chains only when necessary. And Smith is ok with that......which is not ok for us.

A farewell to Bud Adams

Mr. Adams,

Our deepest condolences go out to your family, the Titans / Oilers organization, and to everyone that was affected by your passing.

Die hard Titans fans would like to thank you. Thank you...Mr. Adams...for taking a leap of faith when you picked lil ole country Nashville as the new home of your football franchise. Thank you sir, for being patient with us while you played in front of embarrassingly small crowds in Memphis and Vanderbilt Stadium. As an African American, I thank you for being a trailblazer...and for giving the Warren Moons, Steve McNairs, and Vince Youngs of the world an opportunity to play quarterback at the professional level. Black qb's weren't fashionable in those days.

Thank you...Mr. Adams...for the memories. The Music City Miracle, The Super Bowl appearance, the Sundays that were forever changed because locals finally had their own team to root for. Thank you Bud Adams.

Maybe you can start a new franchise in heaven...you already got your quarterback (Mac9).  GO TITANS!!! follow @plcolter

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 7: Bye Week Replacements

****Opening rant with New York Nick****

Let’s say you’re the rb for the Cleveland Browns, and last year you put up a solid rookie performance of 950 yards on the ground and 11 touchdowns. Some thought, wow, this kid is going to be a beast next year. And can you imagine what his stats would be if he was on a contending team with a real offensive line and a real quarterback?   *Pause*   Trent Richardson gets traded to the Colts and all of the fantasy owners rejoiced as though Bruce Willis actually blew up the deadly asteroid in the movie Armageddon. We get reports from the Colts organization that after just 3 days he is ready to run. In just 3 days he picked up most of the offense, and in just 3 days he will start putting up Adrian Peterson type numbers. I guess we all woke up sore after falling off the couch from that dream. Alabama, you have teased us before with your rb sensations, but this time you have gone too far.  ~ New York Nick

Whatup football family?!?! Welcome to week 7 of the fantasy football season. New Orleans and Oakland are off this week, leaving several starting roles to be filled. And injuries continue to reek havoc on our depth charts, so if you are in need of a replacement or two...you are definitely in the right place. The boys are back with the fantasy news you can use for week 7.

So LETS....GET....STARTED!!!!!

Nick Foles: QB, Philadelphia

Foles filled in for an injured Michael Vick last week (no one saw that coming), and made Tampa Bay look like they were still wearing those Sherbet Orange uniforms from back in the day. Foles put up 296 yards, 3 tds, and no int's, and is slated to start again this week against Dallas, who...by the way...are giving up over 300 yards a game through the air. Good for 30th in the league. Well...not so good.

Jarrett Boykin: WR, GB

Last week the Packers lost two of their top three receivers to injury. Randall Cobb broke his leg and will be out indefinitely. Boykin was thrown into the fire last week vs Baltimore, and struggled for the most part....save a 43 yard reception. This week Boykin will get the start, and will have a full week of practice under his belt. The Packers draw a surprisingly stingy Browns secondary, but don't be scared off. The Packers are a pass first team, and Boykin should get enough targets to earn a spot in your lineup this week.

****Going deep with DP****

Keenan Allen: WR, San Diego

Allen torched the Colts this past Monday night for 9/107/1. And he's no one week wonder. Over the past three weeks, Allen has hauled in 20 receptions for over 300 yards and 2 tds. Keenan "Ivory" Allen has an excellent match up this week vs Jacksonville, who is giving up 384 total yards a game.

Joseph Randle, RB, Dallas

And then there was one. Dallas is losing rb's at an alarming pace. DeMarco Murray is out this week (I know..I was just as shocked as you)...and back up rb Lance Dunbar is likely out as well. That leaves Randle with a waiver wire replacement's dream...a full workload. Philly, this week's opponent, is dead last in total defense. Dallas' high powered offense should be able to move the ball at home against the Eagles, and Randle should benefit from the increase in touches.

****Homer Alert****

If you're down Drew Brees, and you plan on starting Josh Freeman in his place, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. This week's alert is not necessarily about talent, Freeman has shown that he can be productive. The giant red flag in the room is the "unknown". Freeman is making his first start for Minnesota after being released by Tampa Bay. Prior to his release, Freeman was benched for his poor play. If there is a team that a qb would like a fresh start against, it would be the win less Giants...which makes this pick tempting. But hold your horses....you want to see if a change of scenery is all that was needed for Freeman. And until you physically see him start....don't believe the hype. This ain't the injury report, Minnesota can change their tune prior to kickoff....leaving you with a big goose egg at the most important position on your team.

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good luck!!

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 6: Receivers

****Opening rant with New York Nick****

"The apprehension going into the third bye week has turned to manageable, to devastating for the owners of Calvin Johnson and Julio Jones. My first penalty flag goes to ESPN for giving us 15 minutes to find a replacement for Megatron. That’s like finding Superman after Krypton exploded. Impossible. That left us scrambling on Monday morning to find another wr, just in case he can’t suit up against the Browns. If you were lucky enough, most of us found a forgotten name that had a huge week which consisted of 9 catches and 142 yards. Hakeem Nicks. Nicks  found himself in most of the free agent pools early this year, but placing Nicks on your bench settled your stomach like an antacid after eating a 3 day old enchilada. Then we witnessed on Monday night Julio Jones limping off the field to the bench, his leg up on the table and the devastating voice of Mike Tirico saying “this is a cause for concern”.  Once again we scrambled Tuesday morning before the waiver wire exploded. Good luck and don’t forget, we are in this together."

What up football family?!? Welcome to week 6 of the fantasy football season. Injuries and bye weeks have us scrambling for wr's this week. If you're in need of a wr, then you're at the right place! The boys are back with that news you can use for week 6.

So LETS...GET...STARTED!!!

Vincent Brown: WR, San Diego

Vincent Brown is starting to emerge as a reliable weapon for Phillip Rivers, hauling in 7 receptions in back to back games. Last week in Oakland, Brown went for a buck seventeen. The Chargers have absolutely no running game to speak of, so it may take another 400 yard passing performance by Rivers to knock of the Colts. That should bode well for Brown.

****Big Mike's Match ups****

Alshon Jeffrey: WR, Chicago

Jeffrey went off on New Orleans for over 200 yards receiving last week. And he's no one week wonder. In fact, Jeffrey is averaging 7 catches for 125 yards his past three games. He should have no problem equaling those totals this week vs a Giants defense that's giving up just under 270 yards a game through the air.

Garrett Graham: TE, Houston

If you're looking to replace Gonzalez or Clay for Miami, then te Garrett Graham has a nice match up this week. Graham has been productive as the Texans back up te this season. This week he gets the start for injured Owen Daniels. The Rams rank in the bottom half of the league in pass defense, giving up over 255 yards a game.

****Going Deep with DP****

Justin Blackmon: WR, Jacksonville

Fresh off a four game suspension, Jaguars wr Justin Blackmon kicked off his 2013 season with 5 catches, 136 yards, and a td. He also faces Denver, which is good for two reasons. 1. The Broncos are dead last in pass defense, giving up a head shaking 347 yards a game. 2. Denver ranks first in scoring offense (46.1) while the Jags rank 31st in scoring defense (32.7). This means the Broncos should go up big in this one, allowing Jacksonville, and Blackmon, to rack up plenty of second half garbage stats.

Zac Stacy: RB, St. Louis

If you're in a deep league, and the above mentioned receivers are already snagged, then St. Louis rb Zac Stacey is worth a flex play look. Stacy is set to start for the Rams this week, and averaged over 5 yards per carry last week. He draws a Houston defense that's giving up 126 yards a game on the ground, 27th in the league.

****Homer Alert****

If you are an owner of Mr. Larry Fitzgerald, then you...my friend...are on homer alert. Arizona qb Carson Palmer has been brutal the past few weeks, and it's affecting Fitzgerald's numbers. Don't look for the Cardinals passing game to break out of it's funk this week vs San Francisco. The 49ers are only giving up 189 yards a game through the air, second in the league. More impressively, the 49ers have amassed those numbers against the likes of Aaron Rogers, Andrew Luck, and Russell Wilson. So um...Larry?...come take a seat by the coach this week.

Kenny Britt....the tale of two receivers

Since being drafted by Tennessee in the first round of the 2009 draft, the Titans...and their fans have witnessed two Kenny Britt's. Both have been equally frustrating to watch.

Meet 2009 - 2012 Kenny Britt, talented receiver out of Rutgers. Tennessee's best friend on the field, and their worst nightmare off the field. In that time span, Britt had 19 headline grabbing tds...and 9 headline grabbing incidents with the law. It was size, speed, strength, and athletic ability that afforded Britt enough rope to never hang himself. In 2011, Britt was on pace to have an NFL first team season. He missed the rest of that season with a torn mcl and acl. At the end of last season, Britt vowed to come back a changed man.

Meet 2013 Kenny Britt. Rightfully applauded for having an injury...and jury free off season, Britt came into the 2013 season with his legal and knee issues behind him. The Titans were excited to have a healthy and focused Britt lead what was considered to be the best wide receiver corp Tennessee ever assembled.

Then the games started.

Britt has account for five total catches. Five. He's also accounted for more penalty yards than receiving yards. Britt is dropping passes and making mental mistakes...much to the chagrin of the Titans offense.  Tennessee desperately needs Britt to step his game up...like yesterday. The visiting...and undefeated Chiefs pay a visit to Nashville on Sunday, and back up qb Ryan Fitzpatrick will need all hands on deck...especially Kenny's.

Maybe there is a third Kenny Britt to emerge. One that can produce on the field while laying low off the field. He better emerge quick. He's got less than 12 games to appear.   follow @plcolter

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 5: Bye Weeks

***Opening rant with New York Nick***

"Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants. I have never said this before, but I think it might be time to reconsider starting Eli Manning in this second week of the bye. I understand how great you felt once your draft was over and your roster read, RG3 and Eli Manning. You thought your bye week was set, you thought. This year I won’t have to worry about finding a QB to hold down the fort and be stuck with likes of Josh Freeman, or even worse, Tony Romo (sorry, I couldn’t help the burn). But alas, the once epic maneuver has now brought you back to the place where you realize the life of a fantasy football owner is tougher than figuring out what medical plan on Obama Care to choose from. Sadly enough, Manning finally has his wr’s healthy and ready to go, but now he can’t seem to get it up. No pun intended. In this state of confusion and disappointment the best move will be picking up the QB who is playing against Giants, Mike Vick, now that’s ironic." - New York Nick

What up football family?!? Welcome to week five of the fantasy football season. With Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Washington on bye this week, a host of starting fantasy players will be on bye. No worries...the crew is back with that news you can use for week five.

Terrance Williams: WR, Dallas

The Denver Broncos and their high powered offense will invade Big D Sunday afternoon. That means there will be points a plenty...and that's a good thing for the rookie out of Baylor. Williams filled in for (once again) injured Miles Austin last week in San Diego, and put up 7 catches for 71 yards. Dallas will most certainly have to throw it...a lot...to hang with Peyton and company. Williams should get plenty of opportunities to better those numbers this week. And quiet as kept...Denver is 30th against the pass. The Broncos are giving up 316 yards a game though the air.

***Big Mike's Match Ups***

The key to waiver wire success is to study the match ups....it's all about the match ups. If you need a qb or te this week, here are a couple on your waiver wire with good ones.

Brian Hoyer: QB, Cleveland

If you're down RG3 or Big Ben, then Hoyer is definitely worth a look this week. In 2 starts, Hoyer has put up 590 yards and 5 tds. Buffalo, this week's opponent, is giving up 277 yards a game through the air. But you better move fast, Hoyer plays Thursday.

Coby Fleener: TE, Indy

Cleener did work last week against Jacksonville, putting up 5/77/1. The one weakness of the Seahawks secondary is their tight end coverage. Last week, Houston's te's combined for 12 catches, 141 yards, and a touchdown. Cleener is a safe bet this week.

 ***Going Deep with DP***

Ya boy DP showing love to the 12-16 team leagues. Here's a one week gem worth a look this week.

Rashad Jennings: RB, Oakland

Darren McFadden is injured again y'all, so Jennings is up to bat. Last week, Jennings ripped the Redskins for 116 total yards. He also had 8 receptions for you ppr leagues. Jennings is set to carry the load again this week against the Chargers, who are giving up 120 yards a game on the ground.

And keep an eye on Sam Bradford (QB, St. Louis) this week if your starter has a bum match up. Bradford gets the lowly Jags this week, who are giving up 387 yards a game so far. Don't expect the Rams to show any mercy, they're in the same division as Seattle and San Francisco. Bradford should have a huge day.

***Homer Alert***

If you are an owner of San Francisco qb Colin Kaepernick, then you my friend, are on homer alert. Kaepernick has come back to earth the last three weeks after his super human week 1 effort. He also has a brutal match up this week. The Houston Texans are number 1 against the pass...only giving up 141 yards a game. Most owners who drafted Kaepernick insured him with a solid back up. This may be the week to use him.

And be on the look out for "Big Mike's college picks of the week". Will post every Saturday morning prior to the opening kickoffs.

Life is a sport...so always play to win. Good luck!

NFL Quarterly Report

We're at the quarter mark of the NFL season. Wow...time sure flies by huh? After four weeks, some interesting developments have taken place....

The Tale of Two Mannings:

Peyton Manning is undefeated, while little brother Eli is...well...defeated. Both Mannings are on pace to have historic seasons...and that's good and bad. Peyton is the unquestioned mvp if the votes were cast today. His Broncos are 4-0, and Denver is starting to take on that undefeated look. Eli's Giants are win less after four games. You can stick a fork in New York...they're done....and in serious danger of giving up on the season. If this trend continues...then you can bet it would make for an awkward holiday season. You know how kids can be..."Why uncle Eli can't win no games grandpa Archie? My daddy win all the time."

Week 4 Jim Mora Awards

"Playoffs?!?...don't talk to me about...playoffs...you kidding me?"

The now infamous words coined by then Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora. He was addressing a question from the media about his team's playoff chances after they just blew a game.

The YouTube clip should be playing on repeat at several NFC facilities this week. Every year it seems like a team that makes the playoffs the previous season falters the next. But so far in the NFC, this is starting to get ridiculous.

After four games, the six NFC playoff teams from a year ago (Atlanta, San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay, Minnesota, Washington) have a combined record of 10-13. Only Seattle (4-0) has a winning record. If you are a fan of an NFC team that's not on this list...and your team is even somewhat balling...then be encouraged.

Early AFC Showdown

There is a showdown scheduled to take place in the AFC this Sunday afternoon. The game has some major early season playoff implications.

New England vs Cincinnati? Good guess...but no. Baltimore vs Miami? nope! It's the Kansas City Chiefs vs the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs and Titans combined for eight total wins a year ago. Coming into Sunday's match up, the teams boast a combined 7-1 record (and should be 8-0, but the Titans gave one away late). Both teams are winning with the same formula, taking care of the ball and forcing turnovers. The Titans have not committed a turnover this season...a franchise record. The Chiefs have been efficient as well.

The game has major playoff implications for two reasons...the conference and the divisions. For starters...Tennessee and Kansas City, even with their surprising starts, face uphill battles in winning their divisions. The Titans have the Colts and Texans to contend with. The Chiefs have the Broncos and Chargers to fend off. Both are realistically looking at wild card births, and with head to head match up the primary tie breaker in a playoff scenario, then you get the importance of this surprising week 5 showdown.

The other Payton

Don't look now, but New Orleans head coach Sean Payton has his Saints at 4-0. Considering the circumstances surrounding his suspension and return this season, it's gone relatively under the radar. The Saints offense is once again looking scary good with Payton back controlling the play calling. Seattle and San Francisco have stolen the headlines in the NFC thus far, and it's well deserved. But keep your eye on the Saints. They have a 3 1/2 game lead over Atlanta, and could steal home field advantage if the Falcons continue to falter. The Seahawks and 49ers have more to worry about than themselves now.

A great start to another great NFL season. We'll check back week 8 for our mid season awards.  follow @plcolter

NFL Week 4: A great day to be 88

The number 88 is arguably the most popular receiver number in the NFL, and it's often associated with greatness. In the city of Dallas, the number has to be "passed on". On Sunday, the players donning this jersey number didn't disappoint. They accounted for 48 catches, 601 yards, and 9 tds!

Tony Gonzalez: ATL: 12, 149, 2
Demaryius Thomas: DEN: 9, 86, 2
Dez Bryant: DAL: 6, 81, 2
Pierre Garson: WAS: 6, 59, 1
Garrett Graham: HOU: 5, 69, 1
Jeff Maehl, PHI: 2, 43, 1
Emmanuel Sanders: PIT: 4, 57

Former Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Michael "The Playmaker" Irvin (#88) would be proud.   follow @plcolter

Fantasy Football Focus: Week 4: Bye Week Replacements

What up football family?!?! Welcome to week 4 of the fantasy football season. Or better known as...the start of the dreaded bye weeks. Although there are only 2 teams on bye this week (Green Bay, Carolina), they account for two starting fantasy qb's and a host of starting skill players. If you are down one of these players...or need waiver wire help for other reasons....then you're at the right place! The crew is back with the fantasy news you can use for week 4.

So LETS...GET...STARTED!!!

Big Ben Roethlisberger:   QB, Pittsburgh

If you're down Aaron Rogers or Cam Newton, or have a really poor match up with your starter this week, then you may want to take a look at Big Ben. The Steelers defense is already looking historically bad, and Roethlisberger is having to throw to stay in games. That's a great combination for a one week qb replacement, especially with Roethlisberger facing Minnesota this week. Not only are the Vikings giving up 316 yards a game through the air, they gave up over 300 yards to some dude name Brian Hoyer last week. Roethlisberger is averaging over 325 yards a game the last two games.

Bilal Powell:   RB, New York Jets

Powell had a breakout game last week against Buffalo, racking up 149 rushing yards on 27 carries. Powell should be on most waiver wires, and is worthy of being a one week replacement. Even though the Titans currently have a top ten defense, they've giving up rushing td's the past two weeks. Jets rb Chris Ivory has yet to practice this week, and his status for Sunday is questionable at best. Powell will be on the field more than any other waiver wire option at rb this week.

Nick Johnson (NewYorkNick):   Alex Smith:  QB, Kansas City

"You remember the guy who gets hurt, tells the truth, gets benched and then gets fired. With that being said, Alex Smith is the top prospect for a replacement qb this week. Smith makes the throws to keep the chains moving, while managing the football. That should get you through until next week. Allow me to vent just a little on what we are all watching take place. Without naming any team names of course, if the gun smokes after the bullet exits the barrel, then you know it’s firing like it should. Funny how all of the sudden the Chiefs are on a hot streak and the “other team” can’t seem to keep it together. Andy Reid isn't complaining and neither are the fans. Oh, and who gets fired on their day off?"  -  New York Nick

Smith has an excellent match up this week against a struggling Giants defense. New York is giving up 250 yards a game through the air, and Smith has yet to turn the ball over this season.

Michael Jasso (Michigan Wolverines): Denarius Moore: WR, Oakland

If you're down Steve Smith, Randal Cobb, Jordy Nelson, ect, then you should take a real close look at Denarius Moore. Last Monday night, Moore ripped the Broncos secondary to the tune of 6/124/1. This weekend's match up is even better, as Moore draws the Redskins and their 31st ranked passing defense. Washington is giving up over 300 yards a game through the air. Perfect timing so...go pick him up....now.

***Homer Alert***

If you plan on starting Giants qb Eli Manning this week , then you my friend, are on homer alert. 2 Godzilla sized reg flags pop up this week for Manning.

1. So far this year, Manning has 5 ts and 8 int's.
2. The Chiefs defense is 5th against the pass, allowing an impressive 185 yards a game. Throw in the fact that KC has 15 sacks and four int's so far, and you have a recipe for ground hog day for Eli. Great documentary by the way.

But I digress.

Life is a sport...so always play to win! Good Luck!
