Fantasy Big Three

We've come to the end of our fantasy football season, with the first game of your playoff match up kicking off tonight at 7:30 central time. Plenty of potential league champions are chomping at the bit to get this weekend's games started. Three games in particular will likely determine who comes up short, who gets a year's worth of bragging rights, and who gets some cold hard cash.

Atlanta vs Detroit: Calvin Johnson owners have nothing to worry about. Detroit will do everything in their power to get Megatron the record for most receiving yards in a season. He's 182 yards away, and might get that total tonight on national television. As for the Falcons, Ryan and his trio of receivers (White, Jones, and Gonzalez) are must starts. What owners do with running back Michael Turner is a different story. His yards and receptions are way down, but he's scored a touchdown in five straight games. He's a risk reward (in my New York Nick voice).

New Orleans vs Dallas: Plenty of offensive fire power in this late season tilt. Drew Brees and Tony Romo will do their thing. Both tight ends (Whitten and Graham) will be fine. So will both running backs (Murray and Sproles...Sproles only people). Other than Dez Bryant, the receivers in this match up are all risk rewards. Brees and Romo will spread it around and you never know which one will emerge from week to week.

San Fransisco vs Seattle. This is the Pepto Bismal game due to being the final game of the league season. You have two rookie quarterbacks that posted four touchdown performances last week. You also have a match up between the league's two best scoring defenses, separated by only one point (218, 219). Gore and Lynch are must starts, but are you brave enough to start Wilson or Kaepernick against these defenses? And where does that leave the receivers in this match up? Good luck to you all.   follow @plcolter

Fantasy Playoffs: What to watch for

Ah yes, it is fantasy football playoff time. The powers that be couldn't have given us a better slate of games this week to hinge your playoff success on. There are four games in particular that will go a long way in determining who makes their league championship game next week.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans: A match up of two of the league's most potent offenses going against two of the league's worst pass defenses. Could be plenty of fireworks for Drew Brees and company. Not to mention Tampa Bay's three headed monster of Josh Freeman (who threw for 420 yards and three td's against the Saints last game), Doug Martin (third in the league in rushing), and wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

New York Giants at Atlanta: Plenty of fantasy stars for both teams in this late season battle. Matt Ryan and his trio of deadly receivers.Eli Manning, Victor Cruz, and Hakeem Nicks. And let's not forget about the x factor David Wilson, who many have as a sleeper starter this week, By the way, Bradshaw is not playing.

Pittsburgh at Dallas: This one (from a fantasy perspective) hinges on what Steelers defense shows up. Tony Romo and DeMarco Murry have been scoring well. Will Dez Bryant's finger scare owners off this week? Probably not, but how effective will he be? The Cowboys have a good pass defense, but they play awful at home. What might Big Ben, Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown deliver?

San Francisco at New England: This one I'll call the Pepto Bismal match up. Most Brady owners will already know how many points they need from him (and anybody else paying in this one) when it kicks off later tonight. We're all hoping for a shootout in this one right? Good luck to you all, and don't forget to check out the season finale of the Fantasy TakeOver Show this Wednesday 12/19/12 on YouTube.   follow @plcolter

Spurs benching about Memphis, not rest

Last Thursday Gregg Popovich made waves by benching his top four players for their nationally televised game against King James and the defending champion Heat. Popovich's reasoning? His aging team was nearing the end of a long road trip, and the Spurs had a home tilt with Memphis that Saturday. Lost amidst the commissioner's anger and subsequent fine is the real underlying story...the ongoing gamesmanship between Gregg Popovich's Spurs and Lionel Hollins' Grizzlies.

This goes back to the 2010-2011 season. The San Antonio Spurs were sitting atop the western conference with the leagues best record. The Grizzles (who at this point had not won a playoff game in franchise history) fought and clawed their way to a playoff birth with just a few games left to play. After securing their playoff spot in a tightly contested race, Memphis head coach Lionel Hollins purposely benched his (healthy) star players the last few games. Rumors started to spread that coach Hollins was positioning his team to play Popovich's Spurs, who had the number one seed locked up. When asked about it, Spurs guard Tony Parker replied...."They wanted us, now they got us".

Memphis went on to win the series in 6 games, and did so in Spurs like fashion. Memphis smothered San Antonio with their defense and physical play, and made clutch three point shots to close out games. Last year's playoff rematch was foiled by a gritty game seven performance from Chris Paul and the Clippers. The Spurs went on to sweep the Clippers in the second round.

San Antonio and Memphis are once again on a collision course for the playoffs, and Popovich treated their first match up of the year as such. Let's keep in mind that Memphis came into Saturday's match up on the second night of a back to back. The plan worked for Popovich, as San Antonio erased a 14 point second half deficit to take a four point overtime win. With both teams playing so well, their head to head record could loom large in the race for the division title. Nice play by Gregg Popovich. Game on Lionel Hollins. I love this game!  follow @plcolter.

Titans Offense must save Munchak

Another home game...another home loss for the Tennessee Titans. Another home loss with owner Bud Adams in attendance. Yes, the same Bud Adams who put his entire organization on blast after the last home game he attended. An embarrassing beat down from the Chicago Bears to which Adams called the worst home loss ever....that's saying something since he's been an owner for over 50 years!

Mike Munchak responded like most head coaches on the hot seat, he fired a coordinator. Chris Palmer was relieved of his offensive coordinator duties last week. Although I do not disagree with the move, the timing screams of a second year head coach positioning to get a third. Message to Munchak...I hope the offense turns things around, or you could be joining Mr. Palmer in the unemployment line.

I couldn't blame Palmer if he feels like he's a scapegoat. The offense hasn't been any more inept than the defense or special teams. Everyone has been bad. Jake Locker was lost for several games, just when he was starting to hit his stride. And the running game woes have been fixed since the first month of the season.

I know it's only one game, but the new offense didn't look any better than Palmer's. Chris Johnson had only 50 yards rushing, and the offense as a whole cost Tennessee any shot at an upset against Houston. The Titans are now 4-8, and all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Did Tennessee overachieve last year? Perhaps, but a 6-10 or (gasp) 4-12 finish would have everyone screaming for change.

Bud Adams is not getting any younger, and he's becoming more vocal about wanting another Super Bowl run before he hangs it up. Remember his public courtship of free agent Peyton Manning with his first round pick qb within ear shot? I certainly hope the offense can pick things up considerably the next four weeks. If they don't, Palmer's firing could be just the first.    follow @plcolter

Same ole faces...new look Grizzlies

Don't look now, but the Memphis Grizzlies are quietly second in the western conference with a 5-1 record. The fifth win a beatdown of the reining champion Heat. This version of the Memphis Grizzlies has been two years in the making, even if the faces haven't changed.

Two years ago the Grizzles came to within a game of reaching the western conference finals. Rudy Gay was lost for the majority of the year (including the playoffs) with a shoulder injury. At the time of his injury, Rudy was having a career year. Zack Randolph became a star in Memphis during those playoffs. We were left to wonder what could have been with a healthy Gay.

Last year Rudy returned to start the lock out shortened season, but Randolph was lost early with a knee injury. The condensed schedule may have forced Randolph back prematurely, because he was clearly not at full strength when the Grizzlies lost in 7 games to the Clippers in the first round (and yes...the better team won Clippers fans). But we were once again left to wonder what could have been, this time with a healthy Z-Bo.

Health wise, so far so good this year (knock on wood) for the Grizzlies starting lineup. And the results are what we've been finally waiting for. Gay is still the leading scorer, averaging just under 20 points a game. Randolph is healthy and leading the league in rebounds (14.5 per game). He also has a double double every game this year. Mike Conley and Tony Allen are the best defensive back court in the league, evidenced by the Grizzles leading the league in steals the past two years...and so far this year. And Gasol is the most versatile big man in the league. He can shoot jumpers and free throws, and can play big in the paint. He also averages 5 assists a game so far.

The Grizzlies may finally have the one thing they were lacking, a balanced offense to go along with a great defense. It's still early but I really like what I see from the Grizz so far.    follow @plcolter

Moss done no favors this preseason

It looks like the washed up, diva wide receiver comeback tour is now a one man show. As Randy Moss was about to take the field today, I'm sure he had to be thinking...."Thanks T.O. Thanks Chad Johnson. Thanks for nothing!".

Around the time the 49ers and Broncos were about to take the field, T.O. was tweeting he had been cut by Seattle. That makes two failed high profile, washed up diva comebacks the last couple of weeks. Chad Johnson was unceremoniously let go on television...for the whole world to see. His comeback tour fell short because of off the field issues.

T.O. was released for his on the field issues, specifically not being able to catch the damn ball. How ironic considering how long it took for him to catch a break....but I digress.

Like it or not Moss, Johnson, and T.O. are grouped together. All three were once great, all three come with tons of baggage, and all three were non factors in the nfl last season. The nfl has clearly put this comeback tour on a short leash, evidenced by the fact that neither T.O. or Johnson even made it to the regular season. And the Dolphins and Seahawks could use quality veterans at the position. It's apparent that a lack of production or old antics will not be tolerated. The influx of new talent in the league have clearly made them expendable.

What should Moss take from this? The 49ers were a fumble away from the Super Bowl without him last year. Their leash will certainly be the shortest. Shut your mouth and catch everything thrown to you...whenever or how ever many times they throw it to you. Or you my friend, could be on the five year countdown to Canton....starting.....now.   follow @plcolter

Life imitating art for Chad Johnson

This is the first thing I've ever posted that I hope I'm wrong about, but something about the Chad Johnson arrest doesn't sit right with me. We all know that number 85 loves attention above all else. We also know that his wife is a reality show star herself, frequently seen actin a fool on tv. When I first saw the report last night, two things immediately stood out.

I watched the first episode of Hard Knocks with the Miami Dolphins earlier this week and Johnson told someone on the show he was going to get arrested. He even promised it....on camera. The very first weekend following the show's premier, Johnson made good on his promise. Now if that is not a coincidence, I don't know what is.

It also doesn't hurt that Chad Johnson and his wife Evelyn Lozada have their own reality show coming out next month. A friend of mine recently told me that drama is what sells nowadays, and this would certainly qualify as TMZ worthy. I'm certain that tons of people (including myself) will be tuning in to both shows to get a behind the scenes look at what really went on last night....just like they wanted.

I guess my friend was right. Good job by you Chad and Evelyn.   follow @plcolter

Titans preseason: what to watch for

Finally...Titans football is back!! Well...kinda, but football is football...preseason or not. Even the most die hard fans have trouble watching an entire exhibition game, including myself. If you do plan on watching our beloved team get ready for the 2012 season, here are some things to keep an eye on.

Jake Locker: Yes, the battle for the starting qb position between Hasselbeck and Locker officially starts tonight. Conventional wisdom says the conservative Titans would rather Hasselbeck win the job to start, due to the "tough" schedule to start the year. And if we struggle out of the gate, the keys would be handed to Locker for good. But what if Locker plays lights out this preseason and earns the job? Uh-oh...what does coach Munchak do then? If Locker starts, then he has to start...forever. You can't bring in Hasselbeck if Locker struggles out of the gate, because if you do there will be a full blown qb controversy on your hands. Anyone remember Vince Young and Kerry Collins? In contrast, Steve McNair was never benched for Billy Volek...no matter how bad he played. That worked out pretty well for us.

The Big Uglies: The offensive and defensive lines respectively were the main reason the Titans did not make the playoffs last year. We were also the only team with a winning record last year that did not make the playoffs. So it's reasonable to assume that any improvement from these two units should have us in the race in December. On the offensive side, keep a close eye on center Fernando Velasco. He's taking over for veteran Eugene Amano, who is out for the season with a triceps injury. It may not matter who's the starting qb if Velasco is not up to the challenge. Newly acquired guard Steve Hutchinson looks to help the Titans run game....a run game that struggled mightily last year. Hutchinson was the pro bowl cog in Shaun Alexander and Adrian Peterson's monster seasons.

On the defensive side, keep an eye on rookie third round pick Mike Martin out of Michigan. I watched every one of his collegiate starts, and the Titans got a steal. He has a non stop motor, great leverage (former wrestling star), and he is the fiercest of competitors. For a defensive line that finished second to last in sacks last year, don't be surprised if Martin snags a week one start from one of the incumbent defensive tackles. And Derrick Morgan...it's put up or shut up time for you bruh.

Wide Receivers: This unit is an absolute mystery. The only thing we know about Kenny Britt is that we don't know. Nate Washington is solid, but if he's your number one, then you're lacking talent. Can rookie first rounder Kendall Wright make an impact? He'll most certainly have to...there aren't many other options. Tight end Jared Cook looked great to close the season. Will this be the year he finally lives up to his lofty potential?

I'm ready for some football. Go Titans!   follow @plcolter

Ryan can only blame himself

The New York Jets followed yesterday's melee with more skirmishes today. At least three altercations broke out, two following "dirty" plays. Head coach Rex Ryan stopped practice and ripped his team, calling for unity. If teams truly take on the identity of their coaches, then Ryan has no one to blame but himself.

Rex Ryan says what he wants...when he wants. He's brutally honest and mostly unapologetic about it. I get that. Everyone has their own style. But you can't be shocked if your players start to emulate that. If my coach is giving a middle finger to the world, it won't be long before mine follows suit. Especially when you're winning games.....but that's when you're winning.

The Jets started losing the end of last year, and the players were brutally honest and mostly unapologetic about it. Now there's problems in the locker room, and players feel free to say what they want...when they want. Now things are leaking to the press that you would rather keep in house. Now the verbal sparring between players is spilling over to the field. Now it looks like you're losing control of your team. You get the idea.

It's way to early to suggest that things are unraveling for Ryan and his New York Jets. I would suggest that if he wants his team to keep their mouth shut and play, maybe he should lead by example. follow @plcolter

Titans can't catch a break

Is it me or do the Tennessee Titans have the worst luck when it comes to wide receivers? Since our team came to Nashville, I can't think of a single move at that position that ultimately panned out. Derrick Mason was solid, but he doesn't count. Mason overachieved. I'm talking about the "splash" moves, first round picks, and free agency success....or lack thereof.

It started when we were still the Tennessee Oilers. Remember Yancy Thigpin and Carl Pickens? Both were washed up and way past their prime when we signed them. And the Oilers most egregious offense was drafting one yard short Kevin Dyson over some dude name Randy Moss. Well, let me take that back. We did pick up Moss...12 years later off waivers. We were the only team to put in a claim and it was immediately clear why. Moss looked old and uninspired and it was just embarrassing. That may have been the straw that broke (head coach) Jeff Fisher's back...but I digress. We mostly overlooked it because having an NFL team was so new to us. We were just happy to have professional football. And besides, we won a lot more games than we lost.

The Titans have fared no better than the Oilers. In fact, their eye for wide receivers should have a patch on it. Since coming to Tennessee in 1997, the Oilers / Titans drafted 20 wide receivers. Only two made pro bowl appearances (Derrick Mason and Marc Mariani). And those appearances were as return men, not receivers. It's not like we're not trying...we just cant get it right.

Kenny Britt was supposed to change all of that. He has the talent...but um...yeah. He's practically missed the past two seasons and will certainly not play any time soon this year. Now it's up to our 21st wide receiver draftee Kendall Wright to break the curse. But wait, he's not in camp because of a contract dispute. Here we go again.   follow @plcolter

Message to Mavs...don't start Mayo

As a native Tennessean I have mixed feelings about O.J. Mayo joining the Mavericks. On one hand, I'm disappointed that Memphis could not find a way to keep him. Mayo was a solid sixth man and dangerous scoring option (when he was on the hot side of streaky). On the other hand, I'm glad that Mayo gets a fresh start in my new hometown...Dallas. I read today the Mavs have O.J. penciled in as a day one starter...um....please don't do that! I know that Mayo's career numbers suggest otherwise (17.7 pts per game as a starter / 11.5 pts per game as a reserve), but these numbers do not tell the whole story. Mayo was not benched because of a lack of production. Mayo had a lack of production because he was benched.....

Mayo entered his third season as the starter for Memphis. Early into the 2010-2011 season, things went left for O.J. He was first benched for being late to a game day shoot around in November. He followed that up with a fist fight with a teammate (yes...a fist fight) on a team flight (yes...a team flight). Not to be outdone by himself, O.J. followed the mile high melee up with a 10 game suspension for a banned substance. It's not even February y'all....of course he was benched!!!!

Mayo's numbers dipped as a reserve, but he was a much better player on the court the last year and a half. O.J. is a natural scorer, and a volume shooter. As the sixth man he could carry the offensive load, and often did. His three point and free throw shooting kept him on the floor late in games, and he was brilliant in Memphis' first round upset of top seeded San Antonio two years ago.

Dallas is getting a good player, and I know it has to be tempting to start Mayo right away. I see Mayo as a younger and more athletic Jason Terry. Dallas could start newly acquired defensive specialist Dahntay Jones alongside Dirk, maybe put Jones on the other team's best player...a la Memphis and Tony Allen. Mayo would be the offensive spark off the bench and closer. It worked really well for the Grizzlies as a team the last couple of years. I could for Dallas as well. follow @plcolter

Mavs fans: Give Cuban a pass

Dallas Mavericks fans are a sports lover's dream. They are two things...knowledgeable and passionate! Get two or three together and a SportsCenter segment is gonna break out. I absolutely love it, especially being a native Tennessean and Grizzlies fan. My beloved Grizzlies bring me to a point...a plea if you will to Mavs fans worldwide. Cut Mark Cuban some slack on this one. I know my homies at Ambit don't want to hear that. I probably wouldn't either, but the fact is...Cuban's plan almost worked.

If not for a last second Joe Johnson trade, DWill stated on record that he was about to sign with Dallas. If not for the Hawks being lucky enough to unload the worst contract in NBA history (and that's including Kwame Brown), then Mavericks fans would be making their plans for future title runs.

Lamar Odom did Cuban no favors either. Dallas would have finished a much higher seed if Odom would have put up his career numbers. The Mavericks would have also had a much more attractive roster in place when it came to competing with the Nets. It's like he put a black cloud over the organization this year. Mavs fan Rodrigo Alcaraz summed up Odom's stay in Dallas the best. "He was the gift that kept on taking." lol

And last but certainly not least...every team has to eventually rebuild again. Every team has to. Dallas fans enjoyed a championship, and over a decade of prosperity. It's time to rebuild. All great teams do. But at least you can say this about Cuban, he put you in the best possible position to get a top notch player. It just didn't work out. At least he tried.      follow @plcolter

If Tyson can do it, we can too

If anyone reading this is going through a rough time or transitioning from a string of bad circumstances, have no fear....I have great news. If Mike Tyson can bounce back and totally revamp his image, so can we!

And I'm being completely honest here, all jokes aside. On July 31st, Mike Tyson (yes...that Mike Tyson) will be making his Broadway debut. Yes...that Broadway. The man who was addicted to drugs, convicted of rape, arrested numerous other times, bit off the ear of an opponent, tattooed the entire left side of his face, had it all and embarrassingly lost it all, well...you get the idea. That same man turned his pain into a must see show on the worlds most prestigious stage. And the best part is...he's talking about all of the things in his life that should have kept him from a Broadway stage. Stop playin!

Two things immediately stood out to me when I read that article. One...through it all, Mike Tyson kept moving forward. He never gave up on himself. We'd see him pop up on a tv show or two, a movie or two. We may have dismissed it as Tyson being Tyson, but he was slowly changing our perception of him with each step forward. We all remember the Tyson of 10 years ago. None of us could have or would have predicted this type of turnaround. Not from what we saw of Tyson to that point. It took a while, and I give him credit for continuing to believe in himself.

The second thing that stood out was the fact that Tyson, through all of his embarrassing moments never took himself too seriously. He was ok with the fact that he was "not ok". He knew that he was the butt of the joke, and he laughed right along. I guess he knew something we didn't. Tyson's Las Vegas show was a brutally honest assessment of his trials and tribulations, but done so in a light hearted manner. It was a hit! Comedian Kevin Hart turned his own pain into prosperity with his smash hit "Laugh at My Pain". It's something to be said for that. Neither could be accomplished without first...forgiving yourself.

I'm rooting for Mike to continue to evolve and move forward with his life. I'm rooting for that for all of us that have fallen short. Did I mention that Tyson will be 47 this month? It's never too late. We still have hope!    follow @plcolter

The fans are the ultimate Finals winner

Wow...what a fantastic start to the 2011-2012 NBA Finals! Two equally matched, star studded teams are tied at a game a piece. I have no clue who will prevail in this now best of five series between the Heat and Thunder. What I do know is...regardless of who's crowned champions, we (the fans) will ultimately come out the winner!

What makes a great basketball game? Points! And not just points, points from the best players. LeBron James and Kevin Durant have not disappointed, averaging 30.8 and 28.5 points respectively. And they're not just being Prima Donna scorers, they lead their teams in rebounds as well. Both teams have played well offensively, and the stars have been just that.

The late game drama, the huge runs from both teams, and the frenetic pace has kept me glued to my seat. Kevin Durant has been spectacular in the fourth quarter, and LeBron seems to have turned the corner from the passive player who shrunk in last year's finals. Those were two clutch free throws in the closing seconds of game 2.

Like most fans who's team is out of the race, I just wanted to see a good series. And boy have we! I encourage everyone to enjoy these next 4 or 5 games, we may be watching one of the best Finals ever when it's all said and done....regardless of who wins.   follow @plcolter

The NBA must have a rabbit's foot

I am not much of a gambler, but I am willing to bet that NBA commissioner David Stern is somewhere smiling from ear to ear. From the time the lockout ended, the NBA has enjoyed one good break after another. Nothing about last summer would lead you to believe the NBA would deliver like this.

Most of us thought there would be no season at all when Stern started cancelling games, but starting on Christmas day was a blessing in disguise. Starting late lead to a fast and furious regular season. Not a day went by without a good match up, and most of us got to see our teams play at least 3 or 4 times a week.

The NBA lucked out when it came to injuries. Yes, several stars went down with injuries...but not the two best. LeBron James and Kevin Durant not only played every game, they played at an MVP level. The NBA lucked out with the Chris Paul trade. The Clippers are now an exciting contender and the Lakers were no worse for wear. They still won the Pacific division.

The NBA lucked out with Jeremy Lin. It seems like years ago now, but remember Linsanity? When was the last time the world cared about an NBA team in New York? It was a feel good story and unexpected merchandising juggernaut for the league.

The NBA even lucked out in these playoffs. Four match ups went seven games, and the "sexier" team (Lakers, Clippers, Celtics, Heat) advanced each time. Hey David Stern...can you pass around that rabbit's foot? Sharing is caring...and we all know "The NBA Cares".    follow @plcolter

Karma has LeBron right back in Cleveland

While watching last night's game between Boston and Miami, I couldn't help but ask...is this the old Cleveland team in Heat uniforms? I am sure that LeBron James is asking the same thing. You may not believe in karma, but I'm sure it's weighing on LeBron's mind now. It's almost as if the same things that plagued and angered James as a Cavalier have reared their ugly head on South Beach. Somewhere in Cleveland...a groundhog is laughing.

Remember the "King's Cavaliers"? They were a one man show, a regular season juggernaut, and a playoff disappointment. LeBron won back to back MVP's and was the best player on the planet. But each postseason he would be let down by a bunch of coulda been's, shoulda been's, and has been's. Players who were once solid, but a year or two past their prime. Or worse, players that never reached their projected potential. LeBron would put up Herculean stats only to fall short...and take all of the blame. James left Cleveland to get some help. I guess life is not without a sense of irony.

LeBron is once again MVP. The Heat were a regular season juggernaut. And so far, the role players have been a disappointment against Boston. LeBron is averaging 32 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists in the eastern conference finals. 32,9, and 4? Stop playing! LeBron is right back in Cleveland...having to put up stats like these to be tied after four games. And to another inferior team. Chris Bosh is out, and Dwayne Wade is having arguably the worst playoff performance of his career. LeBron is once again forced to carry the load. Isn't that supposedly why he left Cleveland? The only thing different about this team than the Cavaliers are the expectations. Could it be the curse of the "decision"? Only time will tell. For now LeBron...at least you're in South Beach.   follow @plcolter

The NBA lottery selection is fixed

OK. Since no one will say it...dammit I'll say it. The NBA lottery selection is fixed! We have been bamboozled, lead astray, well...you get the idea. At best you have to admit the NBA has been extremely..."fortunate" when it comes to those bouncing ping pongs.
In 2008 the Chicago Bulls had a 1.70% chance of landing the number one pick. They "overcame all odds" and drafted Derrick Rose, who was an NBA ready can't miss prospect. The Bulls got their post Jordan superstar. And the league restored one of their trusted cash cows. Coincidence.....

March 2010, Gilbert Arenas is suspended for pulling a gun on a teammate (we wont even rehash the lunacy of that last statement). Arenas at the time was a great player, and the Wizzards were routinely making the playoffs. The fallout was a public relations nightmare for the league. May 2010, the Wizzards are awarded the number 1 pick with a 10 % chance of getting it. John Wall was drafted and the image of the team has been restored. Coincidence....

July 2010, LeBron James announces his "decision" to leave Cleveland. The Cavaliers immediately went from one of the best teams in the league the past several years to the worst. May 2011, the Cavaliers are awarded the number one pick with a 2.8% chance of getting it. Kyrie Irving goes on to become rookie of the year. Cleveland fans haven't said a word about LeBron since. Coincidence.....

May 2012, the New Orleans Hornets pull off the upset to snag Anthony Davis from the really horrible teams. Wait...didn't the league own the Hornets the past season or two? Didn't the league sell the team just this year? Maybe even throwing in the number one pick to seal the deal? I'm not sayin...I'm just sayin.   follow @plcolter

Smith could learn from Cam Newton

Alex Smith...can you please explain to me why you would call out Cam Newton of all people? When asked why the 49ers were 29th in the league in passing, Smith took offense. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Smith continued..."Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.”

Mr. Smith had to be speaking on emotion, because the stats suggests that Newton is far more advanced at this stage of his career than Smith. Men lie...women lie...numbers don't lie.

Both San Fransisco and Carolina were 2-14 prior to selecting Smith and Newton number one the following draft. Smith lead the 49'ers to a 4-12 record, throwing for one touchdown and 11 interceptions. Newton lead Carolina to a 6-10 record, throwing for 4,051 yards and 35 total touchdowns. Newton broke 9 nfl rookie records on his way to becoming the 2011 rookie of the year. Um...Alex? Not only did Newton's stats obliterate yours, but he won more games as well. Sounds like someone is sipping the red hater-ade.

Newton exhibited a different approach with his recent self evaluation, and it made Alex Smith look even worse. Cam was quoted as saying...."I was very immature. I'll be the first one to tell you, the pouting and the moping, I kind of overdid it. I know that. I was a bad teammate. I shut off to some people who gave unbelievable effort. That's where I have to mature."

Why does this quote make Smith look even worse? With all of Cam's accomplishments, he still held himself accountable to mature and improve. Not once did I hear Smith acknowledge there were areas to improve. And please...don't throw 13-3 around either. Most of Smith's career starts were mired in losing and ineptitude. Ask any 49ers fan if they would trade Smith for Newton...right now. I am sure the answer would not surprise you.   follow @plcolter

NBA wants Heat in finals

The NBA wants the Miami Heat in the finals. And no...I am not talking about superstar treatment or bad officiating. During the 2004 playoffs, NBA Commissioner David Stern was asked who the league would like to see in that year's finals. His response? The Los Angeles Lakers vs.....the Los Angeles Lakers! Stern's devilish grin indicated he was dead serious, and for good reason. If you recall, the Lakers turned the regular season into must see tv....and it had little to do with their play on the court.

For starters, the Lakers signed Carl Malone and Gary Peyton. Along side Kobe and Shaq, these new look Lakers were called the best team ever before they scored one point together. And speaking of Kobe and Shaq, ESPN made a living off their well publicized and contentious beef. Sprinkle in a rape trial for Kobe Bryant that same year and BAM...you have ratings gold! People could not look away, and everyone tuned in to see that finals match up between L.A. and Detroit. We all remember the scandals, but no one outside of those two cities could tell you how many games Detroit won the series in. The NBA doesn't care either way...they still hit their numbers!

The next two seasons San Antonio represented the west in the finals. The Spurs won both times, in what turned out to be two of the lowest rated finals (in terms of viewing) in the history of the league. Advertisers had to be disappointed their top dollar ads did not reach the projected amount of viewers. Did I mention that San Antonio is just as boring now? Did I also mention they have a more than legitimate chance to win it all again? Advertisers must be nervous.....

Fast forward to present day and Stern has got to be sweating bullets. The Miami Heat are his 2004 Lakers team now, and he needs them in the finals. We already saw Derick Rose, Carmello Anthony, Chris Paul, and Kobe Bryant eliminated. Stern can not afford to have LeBron James out of these playoffs. Once he's gone, so are the casual fans. San Antonio vs Philadelphia or Indiana? Stop playin! Or even Oklahoma City vs either one of those teams would be a disaster for the league. Advitisers pay top dollar for those commercial slots, hinging on the fact they will reach a mass audience. Love him or hate him, LeBron can do that all by himself.

If you are a fan of Lebron you will be watching every minute of every game to see if he can finally get it done. If you hate LeBron, you will enjoy every minute of every second of another choke. Casual fans will tune in to see what all of the fuss is about. Every one is happy. Don't be surprised if you see Stern in the stands for the Heat's pivotal game 6 tilt with the Pacers. It's still a business.....  follow @plcolter

NBA was right about Chris Paul trade

Remember when you were a teenager? And your parent or guardian told you that you couldn't do something....that you really wanted to do? And their only reasoning was..."because I said so!"? Nine times out of ten our parents (and those of you that are parents) were right all along. Well...NBA commissioner David Stern pulled a "because I said so" when he nullified a potential trade to send all world point guard Chris Paul to the Lakers. Stern never gave an official reason why, he just basically said no. Instead, he approved a revised trade to send CP3 to the lowly cross town Clippers. Everyone was up in arms, including myself. It was another power hungry commissioner putting the players in their place. David Stern must be smiling from ear to ear now, because like it or not...he was absolutely right.

Let's say that Paul does go to the Lakers. What would we have? The eastern conference! Two or three dominant teams, and a scrap heap of below average teams with players you've never heard of. The Clippers would have been all but irrelevant, and their fans would have to suffer through yet another lottery pick season. Instead they were treated to the birth of Lob City. We watched the maturation of budding superstar Blake Griffin under Paul's guidance. And we saw a balanced, competitive race in the western conference with plenty of star power from teams one through ten. And guess what, both teams are still alive in the playoffs!

And let's not forget about the financial impact of Stern's decision. Two of the most exciting teams in the league now reside in the country's second largest media market. If you look back, not a week went by without the Lakers or Clippers  (or both) being on espn or tnt. The Lakers kept their big three, and the Clippers became contenders. It was a smart move and a good look all the way around. The only ones who didn't benefit was Dallas, because they wound up with Lamar Odom. But I digress.    follow @plcolter

Favorite all time press conference rants....

I was listening to Hill and Schlereth on the way home and found out that today is the 10 year anniversary of Allen Iverson's infamous "we're talking about practice" rant. If you have not seen or heard this rant, do yourself (and your funny bone) a favor and you tube it. He said the word practice at least 40 times.....and with each one it got funnier and funnier. In honor of AI's press conference meltdown, I will share my fab five press conference meltdowns.

5. Momma Iverson: Speaking of the Iverson's, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Momma Iverson had her SUV surrounded by reporters, and they were bombarding her with questions about her son's marital problems. Why did they do that? Simple text won't do this justice. You have to see for yourself. All I can say is..."Did Tawanna tell you that?" lol   www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSM9pqoXV5A

4. Dennis Green: On a nationally televised Monday night in October 2006, Dennis Green's Arizona Cardinals held a 23-3 lead over the Chicago Bears in the 4th qtr. Well...in true Cardinals fashion they squandered the lead and lost to Chicago. Green's post game press conference lasted all of 42 seconds, but he struck gold when he coined the famous line...."The Bears are who we thought they were!!". What's so hilarious about this rant? Green was referring to a week 3 preseason game between the Bears and Cardinals. C'mon Dennis Green. You were reaching on that one.....  www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_N1OjGhIFc

3. T.O: One of my favorite meltowns was Terrell Owen's infamous defense of Tony Romo after being knocked out of the playoffs in 2008. Who could forget his tearful plea: "It's not fair" and "That's my quarterback". Why did this clip make the list? Because less than a year later Owens accused that same quarterback of colluding against certain receivers to get his friend and tight end Jason Witten more catches. It ultimately cost Owens his job in Dallas. In case you forgot...... www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwEihRd7fKA

2. Mike Gundy: I'm a man...I'm 40!!!! This meltdown will go down as one of the best in college football history. Apparently, a news reporter wrote a less than flattering story on one of Oklahoma State's quarterbacks. The article even went as far as to accuse the quarterback's mother of "feeding him lunch". Not buying him lunch...but FEEDING a college student lunch. I agree with Gundy, that part was over the line....but his meltdown made him look unprofessional instead. Keep in mind while you're watching this....the reporter who wrote the article has a front row seat to Gundy's rant. And he never addressed her specifically. Hilarious......  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZU5AnxwIAg

1. Don't wanna be like Mike: My favorite meltdown of all time rarely gets mentioned, but Michael Jordan's hall of fame speech was historically awkward. I remember getting that embarrassed uneasy feeling when I watched it live. You know...that feeling you get when someone on stage isn't funny...and you start feeling bad for them. Michael Jordon took the mic and dropped a gem of a sucker punch to many unsuspecting people in the audience. And he wasn't playing either..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwU04FkI0CE     follow @plcolter

Can't win with Rudy, can't win without him

If you live long enough you will most likely encounter the feeling summed up in an age old saying: "Can't live with them, can't live without them". This slogan is synonymous with married couples, as the love that binds them and draws them closer is also the same divisive force that drives each other crazy at times. In plain English the slogan should read...."I need you, but the fact that I can't change you frustrates me to no end!!"(silent amen from all who have felt this way). As it is in relationships, the same also applies in sports. And Memphis Grizzlies fans are feeling that way today about our very own Rudy Gay. We can't win with him, but we can't win without him either.

If not for two last second misses by Gay, the Grizzlies would be up 3-0 over the Clippers and looking to sweep them out of the playoffs Monday night. Instead, the Grizzlies face a near must win game to avoid a 3-1 deficit. What's so maddening is the fact that without Rudy Gay playing lights out, the Grizzlies could very well be looking to avoid a sweep on Monday night themselves. Gay has carried the offensive load for Memphis all season and thus far in the playoffs. He just cant seem to bury that career defining buzzer beater. Or at the very least, a game winning one.

In all fairness, Gay shouldn't bear the brunt of the blame. I mean...it's only his third career playoff game right? WRONG! Fair or unfair, Rudy Gay is the star of this team and should be held to a higher standard. And it's not like we haven't seen this before from Rudy this season....

In back to back games Rudy Gay missed the game winning shot, but was bailed out by teammates. Dante Cunningham tipped in a Rudy Gay miss to edge Denver 103-102 on February 17. The very next night, Tony Allen tipped in a Rudy Gay game winning miss for a 104-103 victory against Golden State. Rudy Gay was the leading scorer in both games....anyone noticing a trend here?

Yes, Memphis fans know that we need Rudy to be Rudy to have a chance to win this series. We just pray that Rudy is not Rudy when we're down one and he has the last shot. So far we can't win with him, and can't win without him. Follow @plcolter

Titans hope third time is a charm

When I heard the Tennessee Titans selected wide receiver Kendall Wright with their first round pick I was initially shocked. Leading up to the draft, everyone from the water cooler to espn thought the Titans would go defense with their first pick....and for good reason. It was the defense that kept the surprising Titans from making the playoffs last year. I applaud Tennessee's effort to get away from the old "three yards and a cloud of dust" mentality that has plagued them for years.

The Titans offense became stale and predictable during the last years of Jeff Fisher's tenure. Run on first down, run on second down. Scramble for a first down on third, and settle for a 50 yard field goal. The league started to pass Tennessee by, so I am ok with selecting Wright. General Manager Ruston Webster seems to be loading up the skill positions to give eventual franchise qb Jake Locker plenty of weapons. The only problem with that? Tennessee has been terrible at evaluating wide receiver talent since I can remember....

In 1998, the Titans selected wide receiver Kevin Dyson with the sixteenth pick. Oh but wait... Randy Moss was still on the board. Injuries forced Dyson out of the league in 2003, and Randy Moss will be a first ballot hall of famer.

In 2009 Tennessee selected wide receiver Kenny Britt with the 30th overall pick. And with all of his talent, Britt has still been a disappointment. He cant seem to stay on the field, or out of court. Britt has phenomenal ability...but his maturity issues, lack of focus, and injury bugs have cost the Titans more than help them.

The Titans wide receiver evaluation woes do not end with the draft. Remember these free agent flame outs? Yancy Thigpen, Carl Pickens, Randy Moss in 2010....geez. Hopefully this new Titan regime will bring new luck with them. Hopefully for us fans, this third 1st round pick is a charm. Follow @plcolter

What to do with Peace?

Metta World Peace is at it again y'all. This time he threw a flagrant elbow to the head of OKC's James Harden. Did you see him immediately square up when he thought the Thunder players were closing in? And if it was an accident, why did MWP never even look at Harden, let alone check on him? That dude lost it and was ready to fight....again. It was about to be Ron Artest in the Palace all over again. I'm not gonna lie, I sprung off my couch like I overslept for work when it all went down. Thank God cooler heads prevailed though, and we certainly wish Harden a speedy recovery. Now the question is, what's going to happen to Metta World Peace? How many games should he get?

I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, it wasn't like MWP and Harden were wolfing at each other and then the elbow was thrown. It was done in the aftermath of a testosterone filled play a few seconds earlier. With that being said, no matter what he calls himself he will always be Ron Artest. Coo-coo bird, bad tempered, wildly unpredictable Ron Artest. If someone told you what happened yesterday but didn't give you the names, you'd still have Ron Artest in your top three guesses. Because of this, I believe the commissioner is going to come down hard. The Lakers will more than likely lose his services for much of the first round of the playoffs....and that in itself  can upset the competitive balance in the western conference. Is that fair to LA? Should the league care? What do you think?   follow @plcolter

Let the playoff games begin!

Let the playoff games begin! No...not the ones that start next weekend, I'm talking about the first round playoff positioning game that's about to be played in the western conference this week. Keep a close eye on the seven teams that have clinched  a playoff spot in the west. Their actions may tip their hand as to whom they'd rather meet in the first round.

Blame my beloved Grizzlies for my line of thinking. As you recall, Memphis had a hold on the sixth seed coming down the stretch of last year's regular season. San Antonio was the number one seed. Memphis benched healthy starters the last few games, in a not so subtle attempt to drop to eight and face the Spurs in the first round. The move paid off, as Memphis disposed of the Spurs in six relatively easy games. In the copy cat sports world that we live in, you should expect that same strategy to unfold....somewhere.

Memphis won't be doing it again this year, they sit a game and a half behind the fourth place Clippers for home court advantage in the first round. They need to win out. You can count out eighth placed Utah as well, they also need to win out just to get in. But what about Denver?

The Nuggets are sitting in sixth place, and control their own destiny (wink wink). The question now becomes, who would they rather face? I would presume they want no part of the Lakers, who are currently third. With a playoff spot secured, will Denver pull an okee-doke to draw the Spurs or Thunder? And would the Mavs, who are currently seventh, even let them? There is no incentive for Dallas to purposely seek the Lakers either. Plus, the Mavs match up better with the second place Thunder. Will Dallas purposely lose? Should they?

The Lakers and Clippers are not just battling for the division title, they're battling to stay out of a first round match up with fifth place Memphis. Both teams in LA will be looking to win out, and face Denver or Dallas instead.

And let's not forget the the teams at the top. San Antonio and OKC are battling for the number one seed....but let's keep it real. They're battling to stay away from Dallas, a team that gives both of them fits. A wild finish is in store in the wild wild west. I love this game! Follow @plcolter

Mavs bail Out Cuban...sound familiar Dallas?

Mark Cuban looks like a genius right now. His Dallas Mavericks secured a playoff spot, and will begin defense of their title next weekend. I find it humerus that Dallas won this year in spite of Cuban, not because of him....but he will still get all of the credit. The eccentric Mavs owner made a bold decision to blow up the championship unit from a year ago, refusing to re-sign several key pieces like center Tyson Chandler in an attempt to get higher profile players in the future. The not so subtle move sent shock waves throughout the Metroplex last December, as MFFL's (Mavs Fans For Life) cried foul that Cuban would throw away a legitimate chance to defend their first ever championship. I am also sure that aging superstars Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd were not amused that their short window for continued success was not being closed by father time, but from inside the house.

I give ALL of the credit to the Mavericks players and coaching staff for pulling together amidst a season full of distractions. Hopefully Cuban will be humble enough to know that he is extremely fortunate to be in this situation, and won't make the same mistakes that a fellow Dallas owner made during the Cowboys rise in the 90's.......

After back to back titles in 92 and 93, Dallas Cowboy owner and general manager Jerry Jones started smelling himself (that's new school for becoming cocky by the way). And who could blame him at the time? He made the controversial move to first...fire legendary head coach Tom Landry. Then he engineered a blockbuster trade to send star running back Herschel Walker to Minnesota for (an unheard of) five players and six draft pics. Those pics ultimately laid the foundation for the Cowboys return to glory. Landry was replaced by Jimmy Johnson, and Walker was replaced by a guy named Emmitt Smith. Jerry had the magic touch...don't believe me? Just ask him.

Jones became so arrogant that he let a phenomenal coach in Jimmy Johnson go, stating that "anyone" could win with the talent he provided. That controversial move also sent shock waves through the Metroplex. Jerry, like Cuban, looked like a genius when Barry Switzer took basically the same team to another title in 95. That was a gift and a curse for the Cowboys, as Jones' out of control ego has lead to one questionable riverboat gamble after another since. The Cowboys have not sniffed an nfc championship game, let alone Super Bowl since either. I always wondered what would have happened if the Steelers won that Super Bowl in 95. Would Jerry Jones have been humbled enough to hire a general manager? We'll never know. As for Cuban, his team also bailed him out this time, let's see if  he handles it any better than Jones.  Follow @plcolter

More Mayo please.....

Memphis Grizzlies reserve O.J. Mayo is gaining a reputation for hitting the big shot in crunch time. He snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with timely 3 point shooting on several occasions this season, but last night was the most impressive by far. Having scored only three points, Mayo entered the game in the fourth quarter with the Grizzlies down by six. He immediately ran off 10 straight points to take the lead, and sealed the victory with a clutch 3 point shot in the closing seconds. "Juice" finished the game with 20 points, and another confidence building performance. What I love most about this story is that no one saw this coming, but Mayo.

Last year was a far different story for O.J. to say the least. Once a starter averaging 18 points per game, Mayo found himself falling out of favor with the organization with his erratic behavior and production. Then came the suspension for using a banned substance. Then came the beat down from fellow teammate Tony Allen (pun intended...Allen really dotted Mayo up). Then came the trade rumors....all of them. There was a deal in place to send O.J. to Indiana, but it fell through. Imaging the humility of having to go back out there and play for Memphis after that series of embarrassing events?

O.J. Mayo has accepted, and even flourished in his role as the first man off the bench. His teammates and coaches rave about his maturity, and even expressed divine thanks that the original trade fell through. Credit Mayo for continuing to believe in himself when the chips were down. I applaud anyone (whether they play professional sports or not) who can bounce back from a mistake or two and make the most of their second chance. Mayo went from odd man out to possible sixth man of the year this season. I'm rooting for him to win....as a fan and as a human being. follow @plcolter

Z-Bo leading in a different way this year

Last year around this time, Memphis Grizzlies all everything power forward Zack "Z-Bo" Randolph was preparing to put his franchise on his back and carry them to within a game of their first appearance in the nba western conference finals. Tonight against Utah, he is coming off the bench. Wow...what a difference a year makes. But incredibly enough, Randolph is showing more leadership this year, and the Grizzlies could greatly benefit from his new found attitude.

It's no secret that Randolph was labeled a selfish player in his previous stops. Last year in Memphis, we saw him blossom into a clutch, if not elite player. This year Z-Bo was robbed of 37 games with a knee injury, and the Grizzlies were 23-14 in his absence. Backup Marreese Speights had a career year in place of Randolph, and Memphis surprisingly remained in the thick of the playoff race.

When Randolph did return, the Grizzlies immediately struggled, losing the first three games that Ze-Bo started. The team looked out of sync, and confused on who the ball should go through. Rudy Gay and center Marc Gasol were playing at an all star level during Ze-Bo's absence, and Randolph's return made the offense stagnant. Credit head coach Lionel Hollins for having the stones to send Randolph to the bench in place of little known Speights. And kudos to Randolph for taking the high road and being a team player about it. Memphis has benefited as a result.

With Speights back in the starting lineup, the Grizzlies already deep bench just got deeper and a whole lot better. Along with sixth man of the year candidate O.J. Mayo, the Grizzlies now have a starting caliber 1-2 punch coming off the bench. Mayo can score in buckets and Randolph is a walking double double. The Grizzlies are 9-3 since the lineup change and battling for home court advantage in the first round. We live in a day and age where the players have more power than the coaches, and everything in Ze-Bo's past would have suggested that he would make a stink about it. Not only has he not, he continues to average a double double in a limited role. I hope Randolph's new found maturity can last through the playoffs. The Grizzlies success hinges on it. follow @plcolter

Lam Lam's great heist

I was sitting at my desk this morning, dreaming of being a million and one other places when I get a text. It's a picture of Lamar Odom cowering out of town with Lakers paraphernalia on. Now before I start, let me state for the record I am a Grizzlies fan and do not have a dog in the fight. But as a Dallas resident, looking at that photo confirmed what we already suspected. Lamar Odom sabotaged this trade, and he did it on purpose.

There were no personal issues. There were no fitness questions. There were no adjustment concerns. Odom stuck his middle finger up to the entire thought of playing here. He certainly didn't dispel that notion on the court. His play was embarrassingly awful. His competitiveness was reminiscent of a father playing with his young son....and holding back to build the kid's confidence. I gotta give Mavs fans credit...you are extremely patient and forgiving. Odom didn't care. He wanted the hell outta here.

I suspect that Odom's intention was to be released...why else would he be so blatantly bad and aloof? Kudos to Mark Cuban for keeping Lamar on the roster, at least that way Dallas can trade him to Toronto, or Charlotte next season. follow @plcolter

The irony of Gregg Williams' leaked speech

I go on vacation for a few days and the sports world loses their mind. Leaked tapes, conspiracies, motorcycle crashes, infidelity? I love my job! Let's go back to Thursday and the taped bounty speech from then New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. The Saints were facing the San Fransisco 49ers in the division round of the playoffs, and Williams had some "specific instructions" on how to knock some 49ers players out of the game. The fact the tape leaked on the day Sean Payton was supposed to appeal his year long suspension is fishy in itself, but I digress. What I find most interesting, and humorous, was the way the actual game turned out. Talk about a wasted speech.....

Williams said to go after qb Alex Smith. To hit him under the chin and to hit him in the head as much as possible. That worked...to the tune of 327 total yards and four total td's for Smith. Easily the best game of his professional career. Williams referred to 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree as a "fake prima donna" while encouraging his defense to go after his outside acl. Not only did Crabtree come out unscathed, he recorded his first career post season touchdown.

Williams also specifically called out 49ers tight end Vernon Davis. He was recorded telling his defense to essentially roll Davis's ankles so he can not continue the game. Davis had 7 catches, 180 yds, and 2 tds. The latter one sealing the victory for San Fran. And last but not least was Williams plan to stop 49ers running back Frank Gore, by pounding him in the head as frequently as possible. Not "punch him in the mouth"....hit him in the head concussion style. Not only did Gore finish the game with over 100 total yards, the Saints lost their own starting rb to a concussion in the first quarter. If Williams' future in the nfl is now in serious jeopardy, can the leaked speech be one that actually worked? I bet no money was paid after that one. follow @plcolter

Don't cry for Lin

The New York Knicks officially begin life after Linsanity, as phenom point guard Jeremy Lin had surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. The surgery will keep Lin out for the remainder of the season. But don't feel bad for Jeremy Lin, feel bad for the New York Knicks.

New York is in a dog fight with Milwaukee for the final playoff spot in the east. Amare Stoudemire is already out, and Baron Davis is a walking mri. The Knicks need all hands on deck to close this thing out and losing Lin was a huge blow.

Although Jeremy Lin is probably disappointed that his dream season has come to an end, he's got to be feeling like the luckiest man in the world. Lin had a chronic knee ailment, but it held up long enough for him to prove to the world that he is a baller. If this would have happened while he was in the D-League then Lin's 2012 would be going quite differently...

Now Lin has a measure of security. If the Knicks are foolish enough to let Lin walk, there will be no shortage of teams clamouring for his services. Sometimes it's not what happens....it's when it happens. Great if you're Lin...not so much if you're the Knicks. follow @plcolter

Showdown week for Mavs, Clippers, and Grizzlies

With the final four concluding Monday, it's time to hopefully collect your office pool winnings. It's also time to turn our attention to the professionals, where a fierce playoff battle is brewing in the nba's western conference. The Mavericks, Clippers, and Grizzlies have played musical chairs at the 4, 5, and 6 spot throughout the season. All three teams are within three games of the precious four seed, giving them home court advantage in the first round. All three teams are also a bad slide away from missing the playoffs all together. Crazy right? All three teams get a crack at each other in a week full of potential playoff previews.

Monday kicks off with the current fourth place Clippers visiting the current fifth place Mavericks, while sixth place Memphis and OKC tangle in Oklahoma City. The Thunder are 2-0 in their series with the Grizzlies, who are currently a half game behind Dallas.

Wednesday brings another set of showdowns. Memphis and Dallas are both getting healthy at the right time, and it should be a barn burner when they hook up in downtown Dallas. The Grizzlies won the first match up, but Dirk was Ze-Bo were out. Another possible first round preview. Later that night, the Lakers and Clippers battle for the division lead in their all important rubber match.

Saturday night the Mavs and Grizz conclude their season series in Memphis. Next Monday, the Grizz host the Clippers. What a week of incredible match ups. And just in time for the end of college hoops. Thank you basketball gods. follow @plcolter

There's no I in JET

The Dallas Mavericks scored a big win last night in Orlando. A much needed win. Jason Terry's "They don't really care about ME" world tour is not needed, especially for a team that's trying to defend their title. There is no I in team, and there is no I in JET (there isn't even an I in Jason Terry but you get the picture). The Mavericks need their vocal leader to lead right now, and not think about himself.

Last year the Mavs won it all because they played as a team and had unbelievable chemistry. Jason Terry was a huge part of that. I also liked they way he called out the Heat, and backed it up. He used his gift of gab to unite and motivate his team. That was then. Now he's becoming a distraction by whining and complaining about his contract...HIS contract. When I heard him say that we would love to play for Miami just prior to their game against the Heat, I immediately thought of one thing. That girl (or guy) that dates your friend or cousin after you dump them. So obvious and cliche. Terry was reaching on that one, and went out and stunk up the joint that night.

I get it Jet, I would be upset too if the team that I poured blood, sweat, and tears out for could look the other way when it came time to take care of me and my family. I totally get it. I even agree that he should be upset. I completely disagree with the tactics though, especially during a playoff run. Let's not forget the Mavericks are STILL the champs until someone knocks them off, anything can happen.

Turning the attention to your contract status at this important time is selfish and disrespectful to the other teammates that may face similar uncertainty this summer. It could be worse Jet, you could have been traded to the Charlotte Bobcats. At least you can call your own shot as a free agent. I am also sure that Roddy B would trade places with Jet's contract situation to have his father back...but I digress. follow @plcolter

What's a tuna to do?

I was water coolin' it with a colleague (we'll just call him Nick for story telling purposes) about the New Orleans Saints and their soon to be vacant head coaching job. Sean Payton has reached out to retired legend Bill Parcells to man the ship this year. Should the tuna take the Saints up on their offer? A debate ensued.

I said absolutely not. My sole premise being Parcell's age (71) and what that would do to his hall of fame aspirations. If Parcells returns then he will delay his hall of fame eligibility another five years minimum. Is it worth it to baby sit a coaching staff that will more than likely keep their own system in place? Is the nfl grind worth the time and the headache at his age? I say no.

Nick said that Bill Parcells should definitely do it. It's just for a season and he has a chance to steal a super bowl with Drew Brees and that high powered offense. The Saints were a couple of bad bounces away from hosting the nfc championship game last year, and the core group remains in tact. Plus there's always the money aspect. He is sure that Parcells would be handsomely compensated. When asked to refute the tuna's age Nick responded..."He's not gonna die...he made it this far". On that we agree. No Cinderella at this ball

The final four is set, and Cinderella is staying home for the first time in forever. I for one, could not be happier. Upsets in the ncaa tournament are only fun in the first round. The joy of watching David knock off Goliath will temporarily blind you to the fact that you're headed for a "who cares" game the next round. No disrespect to Norfolk State or South Florida, but nobody wants to see you play Kentucky in the final four. We haven't watched you play all year, and you probably busted our bracket. We don't want to see Butler...they played in two of the worst title games in recent history. We want to see the power conference teams, we want to see the star players. We get that this year...and I'm pumped.

Kentucky, Ohio State, Louisville, and Kansas. Now that's a final four. Great teams, great players, great coaches, and great story lines.....

Kentucky and Louisville battle for not only a birth in the title game, but also state supremacy. Basketball is king in the state of Kentucky, and the Wildcats and Cardinals are rolling. Rick Petino and John Calipari are... lets just say...not exactly busom buddies, and both teams are rich in tradition. Kentucky is by far the most talented team, so can John Calipari finally get that long awaited championship? Can Petino's Cardinals continue to lock teams down in the second half?

Ohio State and Kansas have played well all year, and especially well in the tournament. Both teams won at least a share of their conference title, and deserve to be here. Kansas beat Ohio State earlier this season, but the Jayhawks have not seen Jared Sullinger. The Buckeyes All American missed the Kansas game with back spasms, but has dominated so far in the tournament. He will definitely be the x-factor....one way or another. This is a final four that die hard fans of all teams can appreciate. Four worthy candidates with names that you know. The way March Madness intended it. follow @plcolter

Smart move for Tebow...not the Jets

Most people, myself included, thought Tim Tebow would have preferred to play in his home state of Florida. I believe the Broncos allowed Tebow's input in this trade, and picking the Jets over his hometown Jaguars was a brilliant move. Tebow is not just an athlete, he is a brand now. He has a pristine reputation, and a legion of loyal followers. New York is the number one media market in the world. That's a match made in Madison Avenue heaven. Sponsors are already lining up to throw endorsement money his way. New York makes sense for Tim on the field, too. Incumbent starting qb Mark Sanchez is wounded, and Tebow can smell the blood in the water. The Jets have already said that Tebow will play right away (in certain packages), and with Sanchez's recent struggles it won't be long at all before Tebow time turns full time.

On the other hand...the trade makes absolutely no sense to the Jets, and I can't believe or see why they did it. Wait...I take that back. Yes I do. It's the latest in a long string of "look at me now" moments for the Jets under head coach Rex Ryan. First it was the profanity filled hard knocks persona. Then it was the super bowl guarantee. Then it was the public taunting of the cross town Giants, who responded by knocking the Jets out of the playoffs on their way to another title. And if this Tebow move backfires, it could cost Rex his job.

The move sends two different messages to your already divisive locker room. A locker room where anonymous quotes fly around like mosquitoes in the south. The season ended for the Jets with players questioning Sanchez's commitment and mental toughness. So what do the Jets do? They extend Sanchez in a vote of confidence that he is the future. Less than a month later, they trade for a "backup" qb that just happened to start and win an nfl playoff game a year ago. Huh? And you expect this move to not affect Sanchez?

Everyone knows the media coverage that accompanies Tebow, and players are already popping off and taking sides. If Santonio Holmes was frustrated with Sanchez, then how many 8 completion Tebow performances will it take before he stops playing nice. Nothing can derail a season like a qb controversy. Trust me, I'm a Titans fan. The risk reward factor for New York is not on equal footing. At best, Tebow plays well in spurts and the Jets make the playoffs. They will need more than Tebow to dethrone the afc's elite. At worst, heads will roll. And it won't be Tebow's, so good move for him. Bad move for the Jets. follow @plcolter

Tebow gets to test humility

Unless you've been hiding in a cave the past 48 hours, you already know that Peyton Manning will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos this season. What we don't know is the immediate future of now ex-starter Tim Tebow. I am less concerned with what team Tebow plays for, than with the attitude he brings to his new team. We all know Tim Tebow to be a devout Christian who says and does all of the right things. He has a large following of believers as a result. He has also won at every level, and has always been accepted as a winner. As we all know in life, it's easy to be humble when everything is going right. It's far more difficult under uncertainty and rejection. Tebow gets a chance to put his character where his mouth is.

There aren't many backup qb jobs open right now, let alone starting qb jobs. The last few scraps have just been vulture'd up and I seriously doubt that Indy or Washington would be interested in Tebow. Tim's best approach would be the humble one. If a team only wants you in on goal line plays? Fine. If they want to make you a wildcat specialist? Fine. If they want you to be the holder on point after attempts then be the best one in the league.

And if Tebow were smart, he'd put a lid on the Tebowmania stuff at his next stop. Not in a disrespectful way, but if the crowd starts chanting your name after a few bad plays try this approach at your post game press conference.....

"I appreciate all of my fans and all of my supporters, but right now I need you all to be chanting the team's name. We're a team and we're in this together. Whatever they need me to do, I'll do. If and when I get another shot....I'll be ready. Boom....no more controversy.

In the nfl, a quarterback that starts every game is a rarity. Tebow will get his shot again. How he acts in the meantime will weigh far more than a Tebowing pose. follow @plcolter

Titans were too desperate for Manning

It's just something about it that turns you off. You can feel it, sometimes you can even see it. Desperation. It's that energy that tells your inner gut to run....and it ran Peyton Manning out of Tennessee. Bud Adams did the Titans no favors by coming out publicly with his "retirement plans" for Peyton Manning, going as far as to offer a lifetime contract. A what? What exactly is that anyway? I'm sure Peyton Manning was like...oh...k...that's a little weird.

It's no different than the girl that fell in love with you after only one date...and her actions started to creep you out. How can you offer a lifetime contract when Manning hasn't played a meaningful game in over a year? He may be washed up. We don't know for sure yet. Bud Adams was like...I'll pay you whatever you want. You can stay as long as you want. Just please please please come play with us. Did I say please? Geez....no wonder why Manning was like thanks but no thanks.

Denver never appeared desperate at all. The Broncos seemed poised, confident, and consistent in their courtship with Manning. It obviously worked. That's how it works in real life. follow @plcolter

Maybe it's Melo

New York Knicks head coach Mike D'Antoni "resigned" today amidst an embarrassing string of losses. With the talent they have the Knicks have no doubt underachieved, and D'Antoni was smart to walk. He was about to be the scapegoat when the real problem is Carmelo Anthony....and it didn't start this season. You will not win a title with Carmelo Anthony as your star player.

Before you say that Melo won a national championship at Syracuse let me remind you that was almost a decade ago. Melo didn't win in Denver, and it wasn't his fault there either. They bring in Allen Iverson and....nothing. They trade for Chauncy Billups (who was a finals mvp in Detroit) and....nada. Ok it's not the teammates, it's the organization.

So Carmelo forces a trade to New York for a bunch of young pieces. A bunch of young pieces that were playing quite well for the Knicks at that time. They were winning games and there was optimism in Madison Square Garden again. Melo gets there in a mid season trade and the Knicks are swept out of the first round by an old Boston Celtics team.

This year the Knicks have struggled...at least when Carmelo is on the floor. Their only seven game win streak came while Anthony was injured. In fact, that was the best the Knicks have looked in years. Melo returns to the lineup and what do you know? The Knicks go on a six game losing streak, fall to ninth place in the eastern conference, and lose their coach. Hey New York...maybe it's Melo. follow @plcolter

Mixed emotions on Titans, Manning talk

A co-worker of mine told me this morning that my beloved Titans want in on the Manning sweepstakes. I immediately thought...why? I thought Jake Locker did a great job in limited time last season. I was actually looking forward to him starting this year. But then I thought....Manning and CJ?!?...oooooh-wee! Wide receiver Kenny Britt will be back, and he is an absolute beast. And Peyton made a living off of some average receivers in Indy. Ok...now I'm on board with Peyton.

On my break I jumped on tennessean.com and saw that Bud Adams went 06' on us and demanded that his staff be on board with this. His direct quote...

" I am 650 miles away (in Houston), but (they) will do what I say to do because that’s the guy I want and I am going to make the decision."

Sounds like Vince Young all over again. Last year the Titans enjoyed their first locker room drama free season in years. The team looked and played better. If you throw Manning on a staff that's not completely on board then you're gonna recreate the same mess we just got out of. Ok...now I don't want Manning. But...

Then I see Adam's quote... "I think he could play for two or three years. I think he’s the guy that could come in and turn this around for us. Followed by....“I want him (Manning) to be with me the rest of his working period of his life, even when he doesn’t want to play anymore,” he said. “I want him to come to work for us as long as he lives.”

Bud Adams is a billionaire who's accomplished everything in life but a super bowl victory. He is also close to 90 years old. Why not take a once in a lifetime chance to attach yourself and your brand to Peyton Manning? He is a champion and the epitome of class. Ok...now I'm back on board with Peyton. follow@plcolter

Peyton's release made one team's day

By now you've all heard the news, Peyton Manning is no longer an Indianapolis Colt. To his credit, Manning took the high road. Class personified. There were several teams that were delighted by today's news...but the team that was the happiest doesn't even need a quarterback. It's the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints, at least for a day, was not the topic of conversation. Just when their scandal was gaining steam.....BAM....pushed aside for a much more compelling story. I listened to sports radio the entire day and did not hear a word about "bounty gate". The Manning story is just getting started. We have free agency...the speculation...his signing...and all of the fan fair that would accompany it. Peyton Manning will be the front page topic for a while, and the Saints could not be happier. Their punishment will only make a splash...a ripple if you will. From here on out it's Manning, Manning, Manning. You can lay low for now New Orleans. follow @plcolter

Memphis Grizzlies: keepin it 100

Don't look now, but the Memphis Grizzlies have quietly won 10 of their last 12 games and are currently a half game behind the Lakers for fourth place in the west. Fifth place in the west with no Z-Bo? The Grizzlies are also 11-0 this season when scoring 100 points or more. Why could this spell trouble for the Western Conference? Three reasons.

One...Memphis is one of the best defensive teams in the league for a second year in a row. The Grizzlies lead the nba in steals and turnovers. They play physical, and do not care about this player or that player getting their "touches". They show up night in and night out with one goal in mind....to outlast their opponent by wearing them down.

Two...scoring is at an all time low in the nba. In fact, some of the scores look like college scores with teams barely breaking 80 points some nights. That plays right into Grizzlies hands. If opponents are not making their shots and turning the ball over, they will have their hands full with the Grizzlies.

Third and most importantly....the loss of their best player was a blessing in disguise. Zach Randolph tore his mcl on New Years day and has not seen action since. This actually helped the Grizzlies, who in turn had to trade for Marreese Speights and give backup Dante Cunningham extended minutes. Both are playing well and will add quality front court depth once Z-Bo returns. Remember, Memphis lost their best big man off the bench in Darrell Arthur to a season ending injury.

Not to mention the fact that Z-bo, a career 20 point per game player himself, will only add to an offense that has found it's groove behind leading scorer Rudy Gay. With 29 games left in the regular season, it looks like the Grizzlies are hitting their stride. If Memphis continues to keep it 100, they can be a real problem come May. Could be another exciting spring in Tennessee. follow @plcolter.

A Michigan fan's aweful dilema

What a wild and wacky last day of the Big Ten regular season. And a particularly awkward one for Wolverine fans. After Michigan took care of business against Penn State on Sunday, they had to sit...and wait...and worst of all...root for Ohio State of all people. The Buckeyes were up next, and Michigan needed them to beat Michigan State to get a share of their first Big Ten regular season title in 25 years. The irony of it all could make Bo Schembechler roll over in his grave.

The basketball gods must have a sense of humor, because the nature of the game made it even more excruciating. The Buckeyes were down big early, and being completely dominated by Michigan State in the first half. Every Michigan fan was saying the same thing..."those @#$& Buckeyes...they are good for absolutely nothing!" Out of nowhere the Buckeyes stormed back...and each basket was like torture. When Ohio State made that game winning shot...I ain't gonna lie....I jumped up and yelled. I still don't know how I feel about that. Oh well. Go Blue!! follow @plcolter

Kardashian curse strikes again

First it was the Sports Illustrated cover. Then came the Madden cover. Now there's a new jinx in sports...and it's crippling athletes upon contact. It's the Kardashians! In fact, dating a Kardashian has moved ahead of acl injuries as the most damaging thing to an athlete's career.

Reggie Bush was one of the best and most celebrated college football players of all time. He was drafted with the number two pick in the 2006 draft. In his rookie season the Saint's went to their first nfc championship game in 40 years. Reggie was headed for professional stardom....then he met Kim Kardashian. Their relationship just happened to occur during the worst stretch of his football career. He was injured most of the time and ineffective when he did play. After ending his relationship with Kim, Reggie Bush's career suddenly rejuvenated. He was healthy and very productive for the Dolphins last season.

Meanwhile, an unknown reserve wide receiver by the name of Miles Austin was about to make his first start in place of injured Roy Williams. Not only did Austin break a Cowboys record with 250 yards receiving, he also went on to back to back pro bowls. Then he met Kim Kardashian. Not long after, Austin started having hamstring problems and has not been the same since. Miles hasn't sniffed a 250 yard game or pro bowl since.

Then came Kris Humphries. The man was boo'd in Madison Square Garden for goodness sakes. Who gets boo'd in The Garden for who they marry? A man that marries Kim Kardashian!

I dismissed these incidents as coincidence until I saw nba star Lamar Odom meltdown right in front of our very eyes. Odom was a two time champion and sixth man of the year. Then he met Khloe Kardashian. What is it about those Kardashian women? It's got to be in the dna. Now this brotha (Odom) is a shell of himself. He seems that he's depressed for being traded from LA to Dallas, and playing like it too.

I'm sure that Kim and Khloe Kardashian are great women....just not for athletes. follow@plcolter

The nba's second season: what to look for

The nba all star game is now in the review mirror, so let's look toward the second half of the season. With a condensed schedule, each game from here on out takes on added importance. With the exception of Miami, Chicago, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio, everyone is pretty much even. Evidenced by the log jam in the standings for the remaining 12 playoff spots. Keep an eye on these developing story lines...they could have an impact on who this year's champion will be.

Everything starts with the trade deadline on March 15, and all eyes are on Orlando's Dwight Howard. The conference that lands the services of Howard will win it all this year. If he stays in the east then he probably goes to New Jersey. Even with Deron Williams, it won't be enough to dethrone Miami in the east. The Heat would be poised to win it all. If Howard lands in the west then he probably signed with Dallas or the Lakers. Either team would be favored to beat the Heat should they meet up in the finals with Howard roaming the middle.

A far less talked about story line is the return of Memphis' Zach Randolph. Z-Bo finished last season as one of the league's top power forwards, and was also the mvp of the Grizzlies historic playoff run. Due back in a few days, Randolph returns to a team that's quietly seventh in the west. Getting Zach Randolph back puts 20 points and 10 rebounds back in the Grizzlies starting lineup. I'm not saying the Grizzlies will win the west...but they could knock off a one or two seed again this year with a healthy Randolph. The Thunder and Spurs are curently 1 and 2 in the west. After last year's playoffs, I am sure that neither team wants any part of the Grizzlies in a first round match up this year. Remember....Memphis "tanked" games late in the season to draw the Spurs last year, and was a triple overtime loss away from knocking off the Thunder.

The Boston Celtics are now shopping all star point guard Rajon Rondo. The Lakers are looking for a point guard after having CP3 stolen from them. Could two of sports most bitter rivals strike a deal? The New York Knicks should be fun to watch. If they can find a way to mesh all of their newly acquired talent then the Knicks could be a problem...even for Miami. And speaking of the Heat, we're all praying they make it back to the finals. The fourth quarter of game 1 would be a ratings bonanza with King James on the court. follow @plcolter

The slam dunk contest has two choices

The nba all star game was great, but the slam dunk contest was the worst ever. I mean...worse than the ones that were so bad we don't even remember them. Not only did we not know the participants (the winner averages 1 point and 1 rebound for Utah)....it's become like pro wrestling with all of the props and theatrics. From capes to cars...from men to motorcycles. And I still cant figure out how that choir aided Blake Griffin's dunk last year. Bottom line, the slam dunk contest needs one thing that won't happen..participation from it's superstars. So the nba is faced with two choices, revamp the slam dunk contest or retire it once and for all. There is a compromise though...

Why not have the slam dunk contest play out during the actual all star game? There were several highlight reel dunks from several superstars last night. Plenty of alley oops and displays of supreme athleticism. Why not use those dunks as the contestants? And let the fans vote for their favorite throughout the game. The dunk with the most votes will be that year's dunk champion. It would be light hearted and fun for the superstar players, who will feel less pressure to lose or save face. It would also be fun for the fans because it will be completely unscripted. The fans at home would stay interested too in the even that the game was a blowout. Something to think about nba. follow @plcolter.

When keeping it real goes wrong

There is a huge difference between speaking your mind...and speaking too much. Saying the wrong thing in the society we live in today could cost you your reputation, your endorsements, and your job. All of which affect your bottom line...your earning potential. Sometimes it's best to just lay low, especially if you're in the midst of controversy. We have all been exposed to the countless parables regarding talking too much. "Think before you speak...if you do not have anything nice to say don't say anything at all.....we have two ears and one mouth for a reason." The list goes on and on. In three bizarre cases last week, the athlete involved apparently did not get the memo. And it might cost them millions in the end.

Former American League mvp and current Texas Ranger Josh Hamilton caused quite a stir at his spring training debut. Hamilton, with bible in hand, opened the press conference with a verse on humility. When asked if the Rangers would get a hometown discount to resign him, Josh sounded anything but. He stated that he loved the fans, but did not owe the Rangers anything. Um Josh...that might be the last thing you want to be saying right now bruh....especially since your latest relapse has already cost you millions. But that's just plain ole common sense. That applies to every profession. If your actions away from work bring negative publicity to your employer and they decide not to fire you....you may not want to talk performance review for a while. Hey Josh...just lay low and play.

Reigning National League mvp Ryan Braun made unique history, becoming the first player to successfully appeal a positive mlb drug test. From all accounts, it appears the ruling was overturned not because of the urine sample, but the handling of it. If you are acquitted of a crime on a technicality...you take off your shoes and quietly tip toe to the nearest exit right? Not if your Ryan Braun...who immediately went on the offensive. He even went as far as to call the mlb testing process fatally flawed. In the words of my mother..."Hey Ryan...go somewhere and sit down". Until you are ready to address the 20% increase of testosterone in your urine then shut the bleep up and play. You got lucky dude. And why antagonize the very system with the resources to make your life a living hell? Just ask Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Hey Ryan...just lay low and play.

Former NBA player Javaris Crittenton was released from jail after being arrested Wednesday for speeding and obstructing a police officer. Apparently Crittenton was going 60 mph in a 45 mph zone. When pulled over, Javaris refused to get out of his Porsche and became verbally abusive toward the officer. Whats bizarre about this story? Crittenton is already out on bond for murder charges! Who in the world gets out on bond for a murder charge? The city of Atlanta gets a C'MON MAN!!! And to Mr.Crittenton, forget about basketball...you need to lay low and pray. follow @plcolter
