Look for NFL to stiffen player conduct penalites

If you thought NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was tough on player misconduct before, then you will need to brace yourself for the upcoming season that's set to begin in a month. The league has taken center stage this summer...and for all the wrong reasons. And from what we know of Mr. Goodell, he won't be having any of that.

A warning to any player on the brink of landing in the ultimate dog house....Roger Goodell's office.

Plenty of players have felt the "sting of Goodell's belt" since he took over as NFL Commissioner in 2006. Goodell's primary agenda was cleaning up the league's image, and he used unprecedented methods to do so. Often times, to the chagrin of players, fans, and media alike.

Don't expect that to change any time soon now.

In the past month alone we've seen:

Currently unsigned NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson sentenced to jail for...get this...giving his lawyer a celebratory pat on the back side after the judge accepted his plea agreement in a domestic violence incident. For that Ochocinco...you get a C'MON MAN!!!

Cincinnati Bengals corner back Adam "Pacman" Jones assaulted yet another female.

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent was jailed for failing not one...but two drug tests while awaiting a vehicular manslaughter trial involving the death of a close friend and teammate. The trial is set to start in September. Brent is still on the Cowboys roster at this time.

Cleveland Browns rookie Ausar Walcott is facing an attempted murder charge, stemming from a fight outside of a gentleman's club last week. He has since been released.

And just today, Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged was arrested for multiple gun charges, following a car chase in the wee hours of the morning.

The Aaron Hernandez case is the most troubling and polarizing, for all of the obvious known reasons. What must be most troubling for Goodell and the league office...from a business standpoint...is the fact that Hernandez was allegedly referred to as "NFL" when the victim was asked who he was with prior to his death. Aaron Hernandez is not a household name outside of the football community.

NFL is...and that's a problem.

With that being said, don't be the player that winds up in Goodell's office any time soon. It will not end pretty.   follow @plcolter
