NCAA hypocrisy rears it's ugly head...again

The Oregon Ducks have been placed on three years probation for recruiting violations under the watch of then head coach Chip Kelly.

The NCAA had been investigating the Ducks for some time, and Chip Kelly got his you know what outta town right before the Calvary showed up. Once again the coach screws up and leaves without penalty, while the kids...who have a short window of opportunity...are left to pick up the pieces. To add insult to injury, the kids themselves are penalized for transferring to another Division I school. Players must sit a year if they do, which is strong arming at it's best.

But I digress.

Oregon will lose a total of three scholarships, but will be eligible for post season play. They were lucky.

Others were not.

In 2010, USC was hit hard by the NCAA, losing 30 scholarships, a Heisman Trophy, multiple vacated wins, and the opportunity to play for a national championship for two years. Then head coach Pete Carrol left for the pros right before those infractions hit too. The Trojans are still recovering. Carrol is making millions of dollars as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

Last season, the Ohio State Buckeyes were hit with three years of probation, loss of nine scholarships, and a bowl ban for permitted actions under the watch of then head coach Jim Tressel.

But check this out.

Terrelle Pryor, star qb for the Buckeyes, would've faced a five game suspension by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits. Pryor elected to forgo his eligibility and enter the NFL supplemental draft. After being picked up by the Oakland Raiders, the NFL suspended Pryor the first five games of the season.

Oh..so now the NFL wants to enforce collegiate infractions?

Moving on in a hurry.

What was so significant about the bowl ban was the fact that Ohio State finished last season unbeaten...and untied. No trip to the Big Ten Championship game. No shot at a national title. Those Buckeye seniors will carry that the rest of their lives. Meanwhile, Tressel is working for the Indianpolis Colts in a matter of months.

I'm not hating on the coaches. I'd probably run too. All I'm saying is...let the players leave without penalty too.    follow @plcolter
